BOARDMAN -- U.S. Air Force "Band of Flight," from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, will give a free concert at 7 tonight at Boardman Township Park's Maag Outdoor Arts Theater. Seating is on the lawn.
Expo screens old flicks
BUTLER, Pa. -- Restored home movies from film sets during the 1940s and '50s will be shown during the Monster Bash Conference and Expo from Friday through June 27 at Days Inn Conference Center, Route 8 South. The films were made by actor Richard Denning, who starred in science-fiction movies and played Gov. Phillip Gray on the TV series "Hawaii 5-0." His wife was actress Evelyn Ankers, who starred in such movies as "The Wolf Man."
Other actors, special effects masters and artists also will be on hand. The show will open at 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday and June 27. Call (724) 532-5226 for information.
Alumni choir performs
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Alumni of Grove City College Touring Choir will give a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in East Main Presbyterian Church, 120 E. Main St. Members of the group are scheduled to tour the British Isles in July 2005.
Exhibit displays photos
CANFIELD -- Photographer Bob Frost used a large-format camera to take detailed pictures of landscapes, architecture and botany for his show that opens June 27 at Old North Church, 7105 Herbert Road. A reception will be at noon that day. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Frost's show will be on display through Aug. 2.
Museum encourages kids
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts wants to encourage a budding Picasso. The Hoyt and First National Bank of Slippery Rock are sponsoring an art contest for children ages 9 to 15. Up to two original art works, to be matted, mounted or ready for display, may be submitted per child by July 15. All works will be displayed during the Hoyt's Children's Summer Arts Festival on July 23. The winner of the contest will receive a membership to the Hoyt, a gift certificate for free art classes, an opportunity to exhibit works at the Hoyt with the help of its professional curators, a $100 checking account from the bank and a U.S. savings bond. Classes teach magic
WARREN -- Bill Martin, an Ohio Humanities Council scholar, will lead a free magic class for children ages 8 and older at 10 a.m. July 9 at YWCA, 375 N. Park Ave. Each participant should wear a shirt with a pocket and bring a large silk or cotton handkerchief and a tissue.
For adults, Martin will discuss "Houdini: Mystery, Myth and Magic" at 2 p.m. July 9 in Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. N.W. Admission is free.
Martin is part of the "Ohio Chautauqua: The Roaring Twenties" troupe that will be in Warren from July 6 to 10.
Theater classes offered
BOARDMAN -- Move Over Broadway Productions Inc. will offer summer children's theater workshops at Southwoods Commons Auditorium, 7601 Market St. Sessions will be weekdays from July 5 to 9 and from July 12 to 16. "Hold For Laughter," a puppetry workshop with W. Rick Schilling for ages 12 to 16, will meet both weeks. Other classes will meet for one week. They are as follows:
UImprovisation, creative dramatics and theater games with instructor Patricia M. Fagan, 9:30-10:45 a.m. for children in grades 4 to 6;
UVoice instruction for theater with Stena J. Buck, 12:30-1:45 p.m. for ages 12 to 16;
UCreative dramatics with Sara Wickline, 2-3:15 p.m. for grades 1 to 3;
UStage movement and basic musical theater jazz with Joanna Andrei, 3:30-5:15 p.m. for ages 10 to 16;
UAudition workshop with David El'Hatton, 5:15-6:15 p.m. for ages 14 to adult.
