PENNSYLVANIA PARKS | McConnell's Mill

An event for Father's Day will be one of several offered this weekend and next at McConnell's Mill State Park near Portersville, Pa.
Make a Gift for Dad: Participants should bring a pre-washed T-shirt, handkerchief or tie for their father to this hourlong program, which starts at 2:30 p.m. today at the Mill Courtyard. Coffee cans, Sharpie markers and rubbing alcohol will be available to create colors of the rainbow on the fabric.
Native American Evening: People will have an opportunity to hear various nature stories, as told by American Indians. Participants are encouraged to bring something to roast, as well as a comfortable chair. This event is from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the Kildoo ballfield.
Stone Ground Grain Day: Come at noon next Sunday to the Old Mill to sample various types of bread made from stone-ground flours, which are milled and bought locally.
Through Jenny McConnell's Eyes: This half-hour costumed guided tour, which begins at 1:30 p.m. next Sunday, will go from the Mill Courtyard to the Old Mill. Participants will hear about the milling business, the area near the mill and what community life was like in the 1880s from a woman's perspective.
The park will offer three, two-hour programs about animals that begin at 1 p.m. June 28-30 in the Mill Courtyard, and that are part of the Youth Environmental Learning Series. This series of events will explore the life cycles, adaptations, characteristics, habitat and communications of amphibians, and they are open to children ages 4 and 5. Parents interested in signing up their children can call Jackie Kline at (724) 368-9320.
McConnell's Mill also offers two, half-hour corn-grinding demonstration tours that begin at 1 and 3 p.m., as well as two, 45-minute Historic Grist Mill Tours that start at 2 and 4 p.m. The latter tours demonstrate how grain was transformed into flour. Both are on Saturdays and Sundays in the Old Mill.
