Leadership award winner
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Army Capt. James Eric Craig, son of Larry D. and Ann E. Craig, Edinburg Road, was one of 25 officers in the active Army, Army Reserve and National Guard to receive the prestigious Gen. Douglas MacArthur leadership award during a recent Pentagon ceremony.
The leadership award goes to the top company grade officers within the Army who showed the ability to motivate others, understand fellow soldiers and inspire teamwork and commitment in others.
Craig, a 1997 graduate of Youngstown State University, is commander of Company E, Academy Battalion, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, a training support unit which provides medical support and equipment for training done by the Army Medical Department Center and School.
ACADEMY GRAD
Chaney alumnus
2nd Lt. Mike Kripchak was promoted to his current rank and awarded a bachelor of science degree in physics, with a concentration in electrical engineering and Japanese, upon graduation from the Air Force Academy on June 2.
Kripchak was in the top 10 percent of his class, earning him the title of Distinguished Graduate.
Kripchak, a 2000 graduate of Chaney High School, was commissioned by his brother, Air Force 1st Lt. Kristopher Kripchak, a 1996 Chaney graduate, who is a weather officer at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. The new lieutenant has been assigned to Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., in the Electrical Systems, Space Vehicles and Sensor Research Laboratories.
During his four years at the academy, Kripchak, son of Joe and Ethel Kripchak of Youngstown, qualified for the Air Force Free Fall Parachutist Badge, and was a cadet major and assistant squadron commander. He also participated in a scientific research project at Kirkland Air Force Base, N.M., which earned him a co-authorship credit in a published scientific article.

Brookfield couple's son
Coast Guard Chief Damage Controlman (E-7) Brian D. Addicott was promoted to his present rank while assigned to the Sea Marshall Unit in Long Beach, Calif., which boards and escorts cruise ships and freighters to and from the 10-mile limit off the Southern California coastline.
Addicott, son of David and Sylvia Addicott of Brookfield, lives in Seal Beach, Calif., with his wife, Giselle, and their sons, Lachlan Glen and Griffin Joseph. He will relocate to Mira Mosa, Calif., in July when he joins the Pacific Area Tactical Law Enforcement Team, which deploys around the world for periods of three months at a time.

Spc. E-4 Erin N. Layko, a flight operations specialist with the Ohio Army National Guard's Headquarters Co., 137th Assault Helicopter Battalion, out of Rickenbacher Air Force Base, Columbus, is assigned to a peacekeeping mission to Kosovo beginning in September. Layko, a 2000 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and a junior physical therapy student at Youngstown State University, is at Fort Rucker, Ala., for training.
Layko is the daughter of Ron and Nancy Layko Jr. of Youngstown and the granddaughter of Ron and Nancy Layko Sr. of Austintown.
ADVANCED TRAINING
Canfield, YSU graduate
Marine Corps Maj. Paul R. Mogg has graduated from the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and awarded a master of military arts and science degree.
He is the son of Patricia Mogg of Canfield and the late Karl F. Mogg III. Mogg graduated in 1984 from Canfield High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1990 from Youngstown State University.
Army Ranger School
Army 2nd Lt. Andrew G. Hogue has graduated from the 61-day Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Ga. The course is designed to assess and develop military skills, physical and mental endurance, stamina and confidence.
Hogue is the son of Glenn E. and Jo Ann Hogue of Mercer, Pa. He graduated in 1999 from Mercer Area High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 2003 from the Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
Howland graduate
Army Pfc. Cassandra L. Cummings has graduated from the automated logistical specialist advanced individual training course at the Army Quartermaster Center and School, Fort Lee, Va. Cummings, daughter of Joseph B. and Dona L. Cummings of Howland, is a 2001 graduate of Howland High School.
