YOUNGSTOWN -- A welding cart loaded with a 200-gallon tank of liquid oxygen, a 200-gallon tank of acetylene, torches, hoses, gauges and fire equipment were reported missing Thursday from a construction site at Dearborn Street and Robinwood Drive.
The equipment, owned by Great Lakes Construction, was last seen intact about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The windshield of one of the company's pieces of earth-moving equipment at the site also was smashed.
Girl finds loaded gun
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police were called to a home in the 500 block of Cameron Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Thursday after the mother of an 8-year-old girl found the child playing with a loaded gun.
The child told police she found the .32 caliber chrome-plated Smith & amp; Wesson revolver in her back yard. Police recovered the gun from a dog dish in the yard where the children were playing.
The child's mother told officers that police chased someone through the yard about a month ago.
Church windows smashed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Vandals smashed seven windows at an East Side church this week.
The pastor of Friends House Chapel Church, 192 Haseltine Ave., told police she discovered the damage to the second-floor windows on the north side of the building just before 9 a.m. Thursday. She had last seen the building intact about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Pool openings
YOUNGSTOWN -- North pool opened Thursday afternoon and Borts pool was to open at 1 p.m. today.
Both pools were to open Wednesday, but mechanical problems kept them closed. North had electrical problems with its pumps. Borts had unforeseen damage crop up in its mechanical system stemming from damage done to the pump house by vandals earlier this month.
Make-A-Wish donation
WARREN -- Officials of Delphi Packard Electric and International Union of Electrical Workers Local 717 presented a check for more than $13,000 Wednesday to Rachael Fuller, development officer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast Ohio. The donation will support the wishes of three Mahoning Valley children with life-threatening medical conditions. Participating in the ceremony at Delphi's North River Road complex was a local child, identified only as Michael, for whom part of the money will pay for a family trip to Walt Disney World. In the past four years, Delphi has raised more than $80,000 for the foundation to pay for wishes of 16 children.
Sewer project update
PETERSBURG -- An update on the Petersburg sewer project will be at 6:30 p.m. June 22 at the Petersburg Fire Station. Representatives from the Mahoning County engineer's office, U.S. Department of Agriculture office in Wooster, county health board, and URS Corp. will be on hand to answer questions.
ODOT hearing set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Department of Transportation will conduct a public information and comment meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the McKay Auditorium at Youngstown State University's Beeghly College of Education on Lincoln Avenue. The meeting will concern ODOT's plans to rehabilitate six bridges and perform landscaping work along U.S. Route 422 in the city. The bridges are at Covington and Elm streets and Belmont, Ford, Fifth and Wick avenues.
Charged with forgery
BOARDMAN -- A Youngstown woman is charged with 28 counts of felony forgery after police say she stole thousands of dollars from a Boardman doctor.
According to police, Dyahiann Lorraine Morris, 37, of Sherwood Street in Youngstown cashed about $11,000 worth of forged checks from the bank account of her employer, Dr. A. James Giannini.
Police said the thefts took place over six months. No court date has been set for Morris, who is in Mahoning County jail on $70,000 bond.
