Sentenced to 9 monthsin theft from lawyer
WARREN -- A former secretary for a local attorney has been sentenced to nine months in prison. Terri McVicker, no age or address available, was sentenced Thursday during a brief hearing in the courtroom of Judge John Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. She was accused of taking $68,000 from the law office of Atty. Don Guarnieri, where she worked about three years. She had pleaded guilty earlier to one count of theft.
Sentenced in kidnapping
WARREN -- A Youngstown woman, who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and felonious assault for her role in the May 11, 2003, shooting of Tim Wylind of Lordstown, will serve three years in prison. Judge John Stuard sentenced Chinique Davenport, 24, of Quinn Street, on Thursday.
Police said Davenport and another woman, Alza Scott of Oak Street, Warren, were involved in a dispute with Wylind over drugs.
He was discovered wounded in a wooded area in Hubbard Township.
Scott has pleaded innocent to kidnapping, felonious assault and attempted murder charges. Her case is pending.
Flex-Strut gets tax break
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners have approved a 50 percent break on real and personal property taxes for 10 years on expansion of Flex-Strut Inc. in Howland.
The company plans to invest between $1.1 million and $1.7 million in building improvements, new equipment and additional inventory, officials said.
The expansion is expected to result in employment of six additional full-time and two additional part-time employees within three years.
Committee meetings
NILES -- Council members scheduled several committee meetings in the coming weeks.
The utilities committee will meet at 10 a.m. Monday in the conference room of city hall. The finance committee will meet at 3:30 p.m., followed by the safety committee at 4 p.m. June 30, also in the conference room.
$13,000 donated
WARREN -- Delphi Packard Electric Systems and the IUE-CWA Local 717 union presented a check for more than $13,000 to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast Ohio that will go toward granting the wishes of three children from the Mahoning Valley.
The check was presented earlier this week to Rachael Fuller, the foundation's development officer.
"The Make-A-Wish Foundation provides children with wonderful experiences and enriches so many with hope, strength and joy," said Don Arbogast, Local 717 shop chairman.
In the past four years, Delphi Packard has raised more than $80,000 used to grant wishes for 16 children. For more information on the Make-A-Wish Foundation, go to www.wish.org.
Temporary closing
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Lamor Road will be closed between North Darby and North Neshannock roads from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for replacement of a drainage pipe. Detours will be posted.
Hearing on bridges
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Department of Transportation will conduct a public information and comment meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the McKay Auditorium at Youngstown State University's Beeghly College of Education on Lincoln Avenue. The meeting will concern ODOT's plans to rehabilitate six bridges and perform landscaping work along U.S. Route 422 in the city. The bridges are at Covington and Elm streets and Belmont, Ford, Fifth and Wick avenues.
Storm damage repairs
YOUNGSTOWN -- The West Drive by the Wall Garden in Mill Creek Park will be closed from West Glacier Drive to the drive to Birch Hill Cabin for storm damage repairs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, Wednesday through June 25, park officials announced.
