Talks on fire district
SALEM -- Looking to save money, city council agreed Thursday to start talks with Perry Township about combining fire departments.
Proposed is forming a fire district that could use mostly volunteer firefighters, said Councilwoman Nancy Cope, R-at large.
The city spends about $1.2 million annually on its full-time fire department, which has about 16 firefighters.
As part of a joint district, the city probably would contribute about $500,000 annually to the operation, producing a nearly $700,000 savings, Cope explained.
City council and township trustees will first meet on the issue at 4 p.m. July 6.
A joint resolution by the two bodies is all that's needed to establish a fire district, Cope said. It's unnecessary to put the matter on the ballot.

SALEM -- City and Perry Township police said break-ins were reported at two locations and tools were taken from each.

In the city, someone entered a building on the 400 block of West Pershing Street and took about $1,000 worth of tools, including a welding machine.
The crimes were reported Thursday.
