SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Jeff Achenbach wasn't around to witness his son's early infancy.
The Army sergeant was married shortly before being sent on 19 months of continuous duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, and his son was born in his absence.
The child is now 14 months old.
Achenbach is coming home and his family and friends are welcoming him with a celebratory gathering at 5 p.m. Friday at the Sharpsville VFW at 215 N. Walnut St., Sharpsville.
3 teens face charges
GREENVILLE -- Police arrested three juveniles early Wednesday involving problems at Riverside Park over the last three days.
The juveniles, 17, 16, and 15, all from the Greenville area, face charges of burglary, attempted burglary, theft, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property and possession of instruments of a crime.
Police were called for a report of a burglary in progress at the Little League fields on Alan Avenue. Upon arrival, officers observed three male juveniles flee the scene, police said.
Police from Greenville, Hempfield, Pymatuning and Thiel College gave chase and all three suspects were caught, police said.
The juveniles broke open a soda machine at the little league field, and also broke into concession stands at Packard Two Field and Cooper Field earlier in the week, police said. Candy was found at the home of two of the juveniles, who are brothers, police said.
A change of command
VIENNA -- Col. Timothy J. Thomson will take command of the 910th Airlift Wing on Sunday during a change of command ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Thomson, who will replace Brig. Gen. Michael F. Gjede, was commander of the 913th Airlift Wing, Willow Grove Air Reserve Station, Willow Grove, Pa., before coming here. A retirement ceremony for Gjede, who is retiring June 30, will immediately follow the change of command.
Sewer project update
PETERSBURG -- An update on the Petersburg sewer project will be at 6:30 p.m. June 22 at the Petersburg Fire Station. Representatives from the Mahoning County engineer's office, U.S. Department of Agriculture office in Wooster, county health board, and URS Corp. will be on hand to answer questions.
Security training
YOUNGSTOWN -- A security training session for health-care workers who need to comply with the new Health Information Portability and Accountability Act is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon June 23 at the Youngstown State University Metro College in Boardman.
"The Challenge of HIPAA Security: What you don't know will hurt you" will be led by Jim Mountain, a certified network engineer at Carter-Mountain Affiliates Inc. Mountain has helped more than 150 organizations become HIPAA-compliant by implementing improved security on computer networks.
The workshop is designed for management teams and information technology staff at health-care organizations subject to HIPAA regulations, including those providing behavioral health services.
The class is co-sponsored by the Eastern Ohio Health Education Center and Northeast Ohio HealthForce. Registration fee is $39. Registration is limited and must be received by Friday. Call (330) 629-6376.
School's grief counseling
STONEBORO, Pa. -- Lakeview Schools ended the school year June 9, but the administration opened the high school doors Wednesday and today to offer grief counseling for the classmates of Leah C. Furey of Jackson Center.
Furey, 18, and a graduating senior this year, died Tuesday in Butler Memorial Hospital from complications of pneumonia, according to her published obituary. She was ill and was unable to attend her high commencement exercises June 9, said David Sapala, high school principal. He declined to release any information on Furey's student activities.
Counselors were available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and some students did come in, Sapala said.
