MAHONING CO. Robbery suspect hospitalized after cutting his throat
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 37-year-old man, who police said robbed a West Side pharmacy and later tried to kill himself with the same utility knife he used in the robbery, was in St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning.
Hospitalized after his arrest on an aggravated robbery charge was David S. Balog of Paxton Road, Boardman, who was accused of robbing a female cashier at knifepoint at CVS Pharmacy, 2848 Mahoning Ave., at 2:44 p.m. Wednesday. A hospital spokesman declined to give Balog's condition.
Having fled east on Mahoning Avenue from the store, Balog was spotted at Connecticut Avenue and Interstate 680 by an off-duty Mahoning County deputy sheriff. Officials said he was later found by city police at 3:15 p.m. on I-680 southbound at that location, threatening to kill himself and telling police they'd have to shoot him.
Other police arrived with nonlethal bean-bag shotgun ammunition, but, before police could use it, Balog slit his own throat twice from ear-to-ear with the knife, police said. Balog also was wanted by Austintown police on an outstanding aggravated robbery warrant.
