Fla. leaders to tour area
VIENNA -- A delegation of civic and business leaders from the Sanford, Fla., area will tour the Mahoning Valley next week to explore boosting tourism between the two areas.
Nonstop flights from Sanford to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport began in April.
During the visit, which starts next Thursday, the Sanford delegation is expected to meet with county commissioners, mayors and convention and visitor bureau staff from Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Woman reports rape
NILES -- A 31-year-old Difford Drive woman told police she was raped in her home by her ex-boyfriend.
The woman said she was awakened about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday by the sound of her door chimes, and when she answered the door found her ex-boyfriend of Warren, who is under a court order not to have contact with her.
She said she told the man several times to leave, but he pushed her down, removed her clothes and forced her to have sex.
The man left when she called police, reports said. No charges have been filed yet.
Investigating house fire
BAZETTA -- Firefighters are investigating a blaze that caused damage to a one-story ranch home at 3368 Durst Clagg Road. The fire broke out around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday and firefighters battled the blaze for three hours, reports state. No injuries were reported. No damage estimate was available.
Attempted rapes reported
WARREN -- Police are investigating two attempted rapes that happened on Tod Avenue Northwest this week. The first happened in the 600 block of Tod Avenue around 5 a.m. Sunday. The second took place in the 900 block around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, reports state. In both reports, the female victims said they woke up to find an unidentified man in their homes who tried to attack them. Police do not know if the crimes are related.
Monthly ward meeting
WARREN -- Councilman Robert Holmes III, D-4th, will conduct his monthly ward meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hippodrome, 150 High St.
Flushing fire hydrants
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer's Department will be flushing fire hydrants in the Leavittsburg area next week. The area involved is known as the Warren Township Water District System.
Flushing will take place on these streets: Burnett, state Route 5, Diehl South, Manhattan, Riverside, Fisher, Woodview Circle, Meadowbrook, Pangborn, Hobart, Flora, Bechtel, Orris, Burwell, McConnell, Briggs, McManus, Bishop, Mateer, Winters, Turner, Pendletown and Bosworth.
The flushing may result in some water discoloration and loss of pressure.
A change of command
VIENNA -- Col. Timothy J. Thomson will take command of the 910th Airlift Wing on Sunday during a change of command ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Thomson, who will replace Brig. Gen. Michael F. Gjede, was commander of the 913th Airlift Wing, Willow Grove Air Reserve Station, Willow Grove, Pa., before coming here. A retirement ceremony for Gjede, who is retiring June 30, will immediately follow the change of command.
Security training
YOUNGSTOWN -- A security training session for health-care workers who need to comply with the new Health Information Portability and Accountability Act is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Youngstown State University Metro College in Boardman.
The class is co-sponsored by the Eastern Ohio Health Education Center and Northeast Ohio HealthForce. Registration fee is $39. Registration is limited and must be received by Friday. Call (330) 629-6376.
