VIENNA -- Col. Timothy J. Thomson will take command of the 910th Airlift Wing on Sunday during a change of command ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Thomson, who will replace Brig. Gen. Michael F. Gjede, was commander of the 913th Airlift Wing, Willow Grove Air Reserve Station, Willow Grove, Pa., before coming here. A retirement ceremony for Gjede, who is retiring June 30, will immediately follow the change of command.
Fla. leaders to tour area
VIENNA -- A delegation of civic and business leaders from the Sanford, Fla., area will tour the Mahoning Valley June 24 to explore boosting tourism between the two areas.
Nonstop flights from Sanford to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport began in April.
During the visit, the Sanford delegation is expected to meet with county commissioners, mayors and convention and visitor bureau staff from Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Fire-bombing probe
YOUNGSTOWN -- City fire department arson investigators are trying to determine the motive for the fire bombing that destroyed a house at 1554 Republic Ave. Wednesday.
Occupants of the home, two men, were awakened by a noise outside, heard the glass break when a device containing some type of accelerant was thrown through a bedroom window, and escaped without injury, Fire Capt. Alvin Ware said.
The episode was reported at 1:15 a.m. The damage is estimated at $25,000.
Hubbard school board
HUBBARD -- The Hubbard board of education will conduct a public hearing on the proposed 2005 general fund budget for the Hubbard Public Library at 5:30 p.m. June 28 in the media center of the high school, 350 Hall Ave. The board will then meet in executive session at 5:45 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m. The board also will meet in executive session at 5:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the superintendent's office, 150 Hall Ave. No action will be taken at either session.
City property damaged
STRUTHERS -- It will cost $3,875 to repair damage to city property that occurred as the result of an accident Monday morning. John Sveda, safety-service director, said it will cost $475 to replace a "Welcome to Struthers" sign destroyed when a load of pipe rolled over it after a tractor-trailer lost its load. The pipe rolled off the trailer as the truck turned onto State Street from South Bridge Street.
A sidewalk and curbing installed last year were also damaged. It will cost about $3,400 to repair or replace those, Sveda said. The driver, Richard C. Reagan, 26, of Ravenna, was charged.
Teen girl sought
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are looking for a teen girl who was reported as a runaway June 9. Cassandra Campbell, 16, of Carnegie Avenue, is white, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 110 pounds. She has brown hair, blue eyes and was last seen wearing cream-colored pants and a red and white shirt. Cassandra's father said he last saw her at home June 9. Police are asking anyone with information about Cassandra to call them at (330) 799-9721.
House fires
YOUNGSTOWN -- City firefighters responded to two minor house fires Wednesday night in which both homes were occupied. No injuries were reported. A fire that began in the kitchen of a home at 1540 Edwards St. caused an estimated $6,000 damage to the property and $5,000 to its contents. The cause is undetermined, officials said. A kitchen cooking fire Wednesday night caused $4,000 in structural damage and $3,000 damage to the contents of a home at 4214 Southern Blvd. Wednesday night.
