Purse: $6.25 million. Winner's share: $1,125,000.
Television: ESPN (Thursday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 5-7 p.m.) and NBC (Thursday-Friday, 3-5 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 12:30-7 p.m.).
Last year: Jim Furyk won his first major title, beating Australia's Stephen Leaney by three strokes at Olympia Fields in Illinois. Furyk had an 8-under 272 total to match Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Janzen for the lowest 72-hole score in tournament history. Woods tied for 20th, 11 strokes back.
Last week: Sergio Garcia won the Buick Classic in Harrison, N.Y., beating Rory Sabbatini on the third hole of a playoff. Padraig Harrington was eliminated on the second extra hole. The 24-year-old Spaniard also won the Byron Nelson Championship last month in a three-man playoff. ... England's Miles Tunnicliff won the Diageo Championship at Gleneagles in Scotland for his second European tour title.
Notes: Woods is winless in seven major championships since winning the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black for his seventh major victory in an 11-tournament span. The eight-time major champion also won in 2000 at Pebble Beach for the first of four straight major titles, winning by a major-record 15 strokes and finishing at 12-under 272 to become the first player in tournament history to complete 72 holes at double digits under par. He won USGA titles in six consecutive years, the U.S. Junior from 1991-93 and the U.S. Amateur from 1994-96. ... Furyk is attempting to return from a left wrist injury that has sidelined him since the Sony Open in January. He had surgery three months ago to repair torn cartilage. ... David Duval is making his first start of the year. He has not played a tour event since the Las Vegas Invitational in October. ... Two-time winner Ernie Els is playing for the sixth straight week. He won the Memorial two weeks ago. ... Tom Kite, the 1992 winner at Pebble Beach, successfully qualified last week. The 54-year-old Texan is making his 31st consecutive appearance in the event and 32nd overall start. ... Corey Pavin won the last U.S. Open at Shinnecock, beating Greg Norman by two strokes in 1995. Raymond Floyd took the 1986 tournament at the Long Island club, also the site of James Foulis' victory in the second U.S. Open in 1896. ... Jay Haas and son Bill are the first father-son combination to play in two U.S. Opens. Bill Haas will make his pro debut next week in the Booz Allen Classic in Potomac, Md. ... The 2005 tournament will be played at Pinehurst No. 2. The 2006 event is set for Winged Foot's West Course.

Schedule: Friday-Sunday.
Course: Marriott Seaview Resort, Bay Course (6,051 yards, par 71).
Purse: $1.3 million. Winner's share: $195,000.
Television: None.
Last year: Angela Stanford won her first LPGA Tour title, beating Becky Morgan by three strokes. Stanford had rounds of 65, 67 and 65 to finish at 16 under.
Last week: Annika Sorenstam won the LPGA Championship for the second straight year, shooting 64-72 in the 36-hole Sunday finale to beat 19-year-old Shi Hyun Ahn by three strokes. The seven-time major champion has four LPGA Tour victories this year to push her career total to 52.
Notes: Sorenstam, the 1998 and 2002 winner, is skipping the tournament. She set the tournament record of 17-under 196 in 1998. ... The Wegmans Rochester LPGA is next week, followed by the U.S. Women's Open at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Next event: Bank of America Championship, June 25-27, Nashawtac Country Club, Concord, Mass.
Last week: Allen Doyle won the rain-shortened Bayer Advantage Celebrity Pro-Am in Parkville, Md., for his ninth senior title. Jerry Pate finished second, a stroke back.
