ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- City police are warning people to refrain from swimming, boating, kayaking and canoeing in Connoquenessing Creek. Swollen by rain, the creek has a swift current, and police have had to rescue people from it in the last few days. Police said a 14-year-old girl was pulled from the creek Monday off Grim Avenue in Ellport. And on Tuesday, four people who entered at Slippery Rock Creek in Perry Township were also rescued. Police said three were in a canoe and one in a kayak. Both vessels overturned where Slippery Rock Creek meets Connoquenessing Creek. No one was injured, police said.
Pulp and pop culture
SHARON, Pa. -- "The Shadow Knows: A History of Pulp and Pop Culture" will be presented at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Shenango Valley Community Library, East State Street at Sharpsville Avenue. Robert Paulson will present a detailed history of "The Shadow" and other pulp notables, and show how the dime-novel era continues to influence our culture today. The program is free and open to the public.
Girl struck by vehicle
SALEM -- A 5-year-old girl was hospitalized after being hit by a car. Anastasia Cyphert, 528 Aetna St., was struck by a car driven by James Stockton, 26, 884 Summit St., when the girl ran in front of his westbound vehicle. Stockton has not been cited. The accident occurred on Aetna Street near South Lundy Avenue around 5:01 p.m., police said. Anastasia was taken to Salem Community Hospital and was transferred to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where she was in stable condition this morning.
ODOT reopens roads
High water closed two Columbiana County highways for a time, but both are now open, officials of the Ohio Department of Transportation said. State Route 154 in Elkrun Township at Elkton was closed for about three hours Tuesday and opened around 1 p.m. U.S. Route 30 in Hanover Township at Kensington was closed Tuesday afternoon and opened early Wednesday.
Blood drive is canceled
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A blood drive at Shenango Valley Mall Community Room, 3303 E. State St., previously scheduled for Friday from noon-6 p.m. has been canceled.
Drug, weapon charges
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police reported that a man who appeared to be hiding in front of Broadway Storage at 940 Broadway Ave. had alcohol, drugs and some prohibited weapons in his possession. Police spotted John M. McGowan, 19, of Bedford Road, Masury, in front of the business around 2:40 a.m. Friday. He was carrying a case of beer and had brass knuckles and a switchblade knife, police said, adding that they also found numerous prescription pills in a plastic bag in his possession. He was arraigned on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, possession of prohibited offensive weapons, underage drinking and public drunkenness and remained in Mercer County Jail today.
Electronics recycling drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Green Team is offering Mahoning County residents a chance to dispose of old electronic devices.
The county's recycling division will have its second annual Electronics Recycling Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 26 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
The drive is open only to Mahoning County residents. Recyclers should enter the fairgrounds through Gate 9 on Route 46 and follow the signs. The items being accepted are computers and peripherals, monitors, printers and scanners, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, radios, small copiers and cell phones.
The Green Team will not accept microwave ovens and kitchen appliances, large copiers, and commercial or industrial volumes of items.
The Green Team asks that this schedule be observed: recyclers with last names beginning with the letters A-F should bring items from 9 to 11 a.m.; G-N from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and O-Z from 1 to 3 p.m.
