CHESTER, W. VA. Title bouts are theme on Friday at Mountaineer
Youngstown's Durrell Richardson fights in a four-round undercard bout.
CHESTER, W. Va. -- Promoter Greg Nixon had Friday night's card at Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort in mind for quite some time. Three months ago it went beyond just the planning stage and at 7:30 p.m. the first of nine fights will begin, which includes a four-bout undercard and five championship fights.
Billed as "Five Title Fights in One Big Night," Youngstown's Durrell Richardson (2-0, 2 knockouts), is in one of three four-rounders on the undercard. Richardson, trained by Jack Loew at the Southside Boxing Club, will be in the ring with Donnell Humphrey from Cincinnati, who is making his pro debut in a bout set at a 149-pound limit.
Multi-state lineup
The other four-rounders have Donnell Logan (4-0-1) from Memphis fighting Cincinnati's Greg Williams, who is making his pro debut in a 140-pound bout, and Shawn Bailey (4-0) from Cleveland in a 135-pound bout with Karl Hunter (0-7) from Cincinnati. The lone six-rounder is a featherweight match that has Yamin Muhammed (1-4) from Dayton in with Aliquippa's Verquan Kimbrough (6-0, 4 KOs).
Loew will also be in the corner for one of the five title fights, when John "Macho Midget" Bailey battles Jacy Kuhn in a 10-rounder for the West Virginia welterweight championship. Bailey (23-11-2) from New Cumberland, W. Va., travels 50 miles every day to train with Loew. Kuhn, a standout prospect, is 12-1-1 with eight knockouts.
"If I am healthy I can beat this guy," said Bailey.
Added Loew: "With Johnny's work ethic what it is I feel he can win against a guy like Kuhn."
All the title fights are 10-rounders. Also, Monty Meza Clay (10-0, 5 KOs) from Pittsburgh battles Terrence Roy (5-4, 2 KOs) from Memphis for the West Virginia junior lightweight crown. A junior welterweight title bout will have Scotty McCracken (15-6, 11 KOs) from Aliquippa battling Brian "Mountain Man" Thacker (10-9, 6 KOs) from Gallipolis. Thacker has been one of the more entertaining fighters on recent Mountaineer fight cards.
"Soldier" in the ring
In another bout for a West Virginia state championship, Alfonso "Soldier" Williams (6-0, 4 KOs) from Pittsburgh fights Maxell Taylor (7-1, 4 KOs) from Baltimore for the junior middleweight championship.
Taylor, with over 200 amateur bouts, was a two-time champion at the nationals and his preparation for this fight has included sparring sessions with Youngstown's undefeated middleweight Kelly Pavlik, who is preparing for a 10-rounder in July.
Billy Douglas (10-1, 9 KOs) from Columbus fights Abraham Okine (11-0, 6 KOs) from Pittsburgh for the IBC American heavyweight championship.
VIP tickets are $100, Golden Ringside for $60, reserved seats for $40 and general admission for $20.
