Wounded gunman to be charged in 2 slayings
CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio (AP) -- Police responding to a call about gunfire in a suburban Akron neighborhood wounded a gunman suspected of killing two sisters whose bodies were found in the home of their recently deceased mother.
The suspect, Joel Rhoten, 32, and one of the women had recently broken off a relationship, police said.
Rhoten, wounded by police Friday, was listed in serious condition Sunday in the intensive-care unit at Akron City Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Rhoten will be charged with two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of attempted aggravated murder, according to a police news release. The attempted murder charges will be filed because Rhoten fired at officers, police said.
The bodies of Karen Mallory, 45, of North Royalton, and Katharine Kube, 42, of Stow, were found in their mother's home. Rhoten and Kube recently ended a relationship, police said.
Two weeks ago, police arrested Rhoten after he was charged with domestic violence for an altercation with Kube at her Stow house May 27.
The house where the shootings took place was owned by Alice Mallory, who died Jan. 18. Police said Rhoten had lived there for one month.
