Anderson grabs 8th Pro Stock title of season
KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- Greg Anderson won his eighth Pro Stock title of the season Sunday at the Pontiac Excitement NHRA Nationals at National Trail Raceway.
Darrell Russell, Del Worsham and Andrew Hines also earned victories at the $2 million race.
Anderson, in the final round for all but one race this season, turned in a 6.854-second run at 201.73 mph in a Pontiac Grand Am, defeating Dave Connolly's 6.937 pass at 201.55 in a Chevy Cavalier.
Anderson, the defending Pro Stock champion, has a 378-point lead in the standings.
Russell earned the sixth victory of his career and first since July 2002 when he covered a quarter-mile in 4.569 at 326.00 in the Keystone dragster in the top fuel division. Points leader Tony Schumacher turned in a losing pass of 4.602 at 206.95 in the U.S. Army dragster.
Worsham won the funny car with a pass of 5.487 at 254.62 in a Chevy Monte Carlo for his third win of the season and 17th of his career. He beat Gary Scelzi's 5.651 at 206.95 in a Dodge Stratus.
In the pro stock bike, Hines earned the second win of his career, beating Steve Johnson. Hines went 7.131 at 185.56 on a Harley-Davidson, beating Johnson's 7.447 at 180.16 on a Suzuki.
