Singer stirs controversywith comment on Bush
LONDON -- Morrissey, outspoken lead singer of '80s rockers The Smiths, has sparked an Internet storm with reported comments about President Bush.
The Manchester Evening News said Thursday it had received a record number of hits after reporting on its Web site that the 45-year-old singer had interrupted a Dublin concert Saturday with news of former President Ronald Reagan's death, adding that he wished Bush had died instead.
Morrissey's record company, Sanctuary Records, could not confirm the remarks.
"We do not have a recording of the gig, but as far as we can tell, Morrissey was just alerting the audience to the fact that Ronald Reagan had died," the newspaper quoted the company as saying. "He then simply followed that up with his comment about George Bush, which was his own opinion. He is no stranger to controversy."
Dennis Rodman sellsbeachfront house
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has sold the beachfront home where his wild parties sparked neighbor complaints and frequent police visits.
The home was offered for $3.8 million and an Arizona developer bought it for cash in two days, said Christopher Parr, Rodman's real estate agent.
Rodman bought the house in 1996 for $825,000, Parr said.
His agent, Darren Prince, told the Los Angeles Times that Rodman is considering moving to Los Angeles or elsewhere in California or perhaps to Dallas, where he grew up.
It was unclear whether the home sale was linked to the breakup of his marriage to his third wife, Michelle, whom he married in May 2003. The mother of two of his children received a temporary restraining order in April that prevents Rodman from coming within 100 yards of her. She is suing for divorce and in court documents estimated monthly expenses at $17,000.
She lived apart from Rodman, whose home was the scene of raucous parties and occasional fights. Police said they were called to the residence 80 times during his eight years there.
Neighbors said things have been quieter recently since the 43-year-old Rodman decided to quit drinking.
His agent said Rodman sees an alcohol counselor and uses a drug that causes nausea if he drinks.
Anniversary partyfor 'Field of Dreams'
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Actor Kevin Costner says he would be glad to make another baseball movie.
He also believes that disgraced Chicago White Sox star Shoeless Joe Jackson should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Costner was on hand Wednesday at the DVD release party for the 15th- anniversary edition of "Field of Dreams." Universal Studios dressed a West Hollywood baseball field with cornstalks and bleachers and projected the film on an outdoor screen for a crowd that included Costner's co-stars Amy Madigan and Timothy Busfield.
Costner said the mystical tale might have a tough time finding an audience today in the middle of special effects-laden blockbusters and sequels.
The movie follows Costner's character as he builds a baseball diamond in an Iowa cornfield to attract Shoeless Joe Jackson, who was banned from baseball for life after his team was found to have thrown the 1919 World Series.
Jackson's teammates were found to have taken money from gamblers to purposely lose the series. Jackson knew about the scheme, but said he refused the money and actually played some of the best games of his career during the series.
