Eagle award honor
Edward F. Byers, son of Ed and Alice Byers of Howland, recently received the Eagle Scout award at a court of honor at the Warren Elks Lodge 295. He is a member of Greater Western Reserve Council Boy Scout Troop 101, with Jim Potjunas as scoutmaster.
Byers joined Troop 101 in May 1996 after earning his Arrow of Light with Cub Pack 122. He has had Troop 101 leadership positions of assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader, senior quartermaster and librarian. He earned 28 merit badges.
For his Eagle service project, he refurbished the outdoor bulletin board and the grounds of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Resource Manager's Office at Mosquito Lake State Park. He also built benches on the dam's tailwaters area and sowed wildflower seeds on Corps property along state Route 305.
Byers is a graduate of Howland High school and is a freshman at Kent State University, Kent, where he is pursuing a degree in mass communication and journalism.
DOCTORS
Medical degree
Dr. Tracy L. Smith graduated Friday from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico, with a degree in medicine.
She is the daughter of Paul and Rose DePaola Mucci of Boardman and the granddaughter of Grace DePaola of Canfield and the late Thomas J. DePaola.
She is a 1989 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and obtained a bachelor's degree in combined science and a master's degree in immunology from Youngstown State University.
While pursuing her doctorate in molecular biology, she taught anatomy and physiology at Cleveland State University and did research at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in cardiac gene therapy.
While pursuing her medical education in Guadalajara, Dr. Smith participated in a research project through Smith, Kline and Beecham of Japan for the development of a new medical regime in pharmacological drug therapy for schizophrenia.
She will be completing her internship in New York, focusing on surgery.
3 from Mahoning County
Three people from Mahoning County received their medical degrees this month from Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health. They are Nicole M.H. Wallis of Youngstown, Dana Marie Goldberg of Boardman and Michael J. Myers of Struthers.
Dr. Wallis is married to Thomas R. Zackasee and is the daughter of Robert and Bonnie Wallis of Youngstown. She is a 1996 graduate of Ursuline High School and graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1999, with a bachelor of science degree in medical pre-professional studies.
She was selected to complete her clinical training at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and while doing so was chosen twice as Medical Student of the Year, by both the Cleveland Society and The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
She is pursuing a residency in emergency medicine in the combined MetroHealth Trauma Center/Cleveland Clinic program.
Dr. Goldberg is the daughter of Daniel and Deborah Schiavone and is a 1996 graduate of Boardman High School. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame.
She is pursuing a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at OSU Medical Center.
Dr. Myers is a 1992 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School. He attended John Carroll University in Cleveland and received his undergraduate degree from OSU.
In July, Dr. Myers will begin a three-year residency in family practice medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital and Kettering Medical Center in Dayton.
He has moved to the Dayton area with his wife, Michele, and son, Julius. Dr. Myers is the son of John and Nadyne Myers of Creed Street, Struthers.

Passed Ohio State Bar
Grant William MacKay, an honors graduate of East Palestine High School, has passed the Ohio State Bar Examination.
Atty. MacKay received his bachelor of science degrees in business administration, marketing, management and technology from John Carroll University, Cleveland.
He earned his law degree from the John Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University in August 2003. He is associated with the law offices of Charles E. Wagner in Cleveland.
He is the son of David and Karol MacKay of East Palestine.
