John D. Stiner
Navy Reserve Chief Damage Controlman John D. Stiner, command chief and training officer of the Navy/Marine Corps Reserve Center at Youngstown Air Reserve Station since August 2000, is retiring July 31 after 23 years of service.
Stiner, 43, of Boardman, enlisted in the Navy under the Delayed Entry Program after graduation from South High School in 1980, and started basic training in San Diego in February 1981.
During his military career, he earned a bachelor of science degree in work force education and development at Southern Illinois University, and an associate degree in liberal arts from City College of Chicago.
After basic, he was trained as a hull maintenance technician and served on several ships, including the USS Reeves, the USS Antrim, the USS Furer and the USS Wadsworth. After his first tour on active duty, during which he was promoted to petty officer 2nd class, Stiner joined the Naval Reserve and was a recruiter for Naval Reserve Center at Jamestown, N.Y., and the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Erie, Pa.
Stiner re-enlisted and was trained as a firefighting instructor at Fleet Mine Warfare Training Center, Charleston, S.C., where he was promoted to petty officer 1st class, and became the leading petty officer for firefighting instructors.
He was promoted to chief petty officer and became qualified as an enlisted surface warfare specialist FFG-7 Class engineering officer of the watch. In conjunction with his normal duties, Stiner performed as a gas free engineer for the Coast Guard boarding team, inspecting tanks and voids during counter-drug operations in the Caribbean Sea.
In February 1994, Stiner transferred to Fleet Training Center, Mayport, Fla., where he was course curriculum model manager, supervisor, and high risk platform instructor for the Advanced Fire Fighting Course, and was designated a master training specialist.
In July 1996, Stiner became command chief and training officer at the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center Akron; and in November 1998, Stiner became the leading chief petty officer for damage control for the USS Wadsworth in San Diego.
During his 23-year career, he received many awards and ribbons, including the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy "E" Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
Stiner is married to the former Linda M. Cannata, formerly of Youngstown. His retirement plans include working with the local veterans community and to be an active philanthropist.

Sean Finnerty
Capt. Sean Finnerty of Boardman is executive officer for the Fort Lewis-based Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) serving in Northern Iraq, where he has been since November. In addition to his duties as the executive officer for HHC, he is convoy commander for many of the logistical convoys that move back and forth across Mosul.
His wife, Ellen, and daughter, Sierra, live in the Tacoma, Wash., area.
Steven T. Strausbaugh
Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Steven T. Strausbaugh, son of Kristine H. and Thomas E. Strausbaugh of New Castle, Pa., is deployed to the Mediterranean Sea assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tampa, home ported in Portsmouth, Va. Strausbaugh is a 1999 graduate of Shenango High School, New Castle, Pa.

Navy Fireman Kabir N. Aldeen, son of Sandra J. Aldeen of Youngstown, and Rasheed N. Aldeen of Washington, D.C., destroyer USS Thorn. He is a 2001 graduate of Eastern Senior High School, Washington, D.C.
Navy Seaman Justin R. O'Hara, son of Angie M. and Michael O'Hara of Youngstown, guided missile destroyer USS Cole. He is a 1998 graduate of Ursuline High School.
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Hans B. Semple, son of Patrice M. and Edward E. Semple of Girard, guided missile destroyer USS Gonzalez. Semple is a 1991 graduate of Girard High School.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps commissioned two second lieutenants in a ceremony in YSU's Kilcawley Center after commencement. They are:
Daniel C. Rodriguez, son of Carlos Rodriguez of Poland. Commissioned in the Armor branch, he will report June 17 to Fort Lewis, Wash., to support the Army ROTC Leadership Course. In August, he will attend the Armor Officer Basic Course at Fort Knox, Ky., and then will be assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Germany. He received a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from YSU.
Gaetano M. Snow, son of Jerry Snow of Cortland. Commissioned in the Ordnance Corps, he will report for active duty July 5 at Fort Lewis, Wash., to support the ROTC Leadership and Development Course. In September, he will report to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., to attend the Ordnance Officer Basic Course. He will then be assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. He received a bachelor of science degree in geology from YSU.
