NOTEBOOK From Jacobs Field
Martinez injured: Whew. That giant exhale was the Indians taking a deep breath. Catcher Victor Martinez isn't hurt badly.
Martinez will miss at least a few games after spraining his right foot while running the bases in the ninth inning of Thursday night's loss to Florida. An MRI taken Friday was negative, but Martinez is likely to miss the weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds.
"It'll probably take a couple days for him to be ready to get back out there," manager Eric Wedge said. "He's better today, so it's not that serious."
Martinez, leading the Indians in homers and RBIs and pushing to make the AL's All-Star team, got hurt while rounding first base on a double in Cleveland's 4-1 loss. Martinez was lifting weights before the game and unavailable for comment.
Wedge acknowledged it's impossible for the Indians to replace Martinez's bat. He entered the weekend batting .309 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs.
"It's a different lineup without him in it," Wedge said. "No doubt about it." Tim Laker started Friday night's game with Sandy Martinez, brought up from Triple-A Buffalo, as the backup.
The Indians acquired Sandy Martinez from Pittsburgh on April 8 after he was released by the Pirates. In Buffalo, he batted .245 with three homers and 18 RBIs. Martinez has also played for Toronto, Florida, Montreal and the Chicago Cubs.
Because of injuries, the 33-year-old hasn't appeared in a big league game since April 2, 2001, with Montreal when he blew out his elbow on opening day. He underwent Tommy John surgery and has been hoping to get back to the majors ever since.
"I knew if I was playing good, sooner or later something was going to happen," he said.
Seeing red: To celebrate their 1975 season, the Indians wore their all-red uniforms -- tops and bottoms -- for Friday night's series opener against Cincinnati.
"I don't know about this," Laker said before donning the replica uniforms, which were not getting good reviews in Cleveland's clubhouse. "It's hard to make red pants look good, even with blue socks on."
The Reds joined in the fun, but they weren't complaining about their retro look. After all, they wore the '75 uniforms made famous by "The Big Red Machine," who won the World Series that year.
"You look pretty comfortable in that," Ken Griffey Jr. said as pitching coach Don Gullet walked by in his uniform. "You probably brought that one in from home."
Gullet went 15-4 for the '75 Reds.
The bright red uniforms brought back memories for Indians broadcaster Rick Manning, who was a rookie for Cleveland in '75.
"Nobody liked them," Manning said of the Indians' red-on-red fashions. "No one I knew. The red tops were always all right, but the bottoms were tough to take."
Manning can complain now, but he didn't have much to say about the uniforms 29 years ago.
"What was I going to say?" he said. "I was a rookie, I was like, 'Give it to me, I'll wear whatever you want.' "
Baselines: RHP Scott Elarton will be brought up from Triple-A Buffalo to start today's game. The Indians signed him to a minor league contract on May 25. He began the season in Colorado but was released after going 0-6 with a 9.80 ERA in eight starts. ... Indians SS Omar Vizquel and former Reds great Davey Concepcion will be honored during a pregame ceremony today. The pair, which combined for 14 Gold Gloves, had a dual bobblehead made in their honor. ... RHP Jeff D'Amico will make a rehab start today for Buffalo in Rochester. He has been on the DL since May 11 with lower back inflammation.
