AUSTIN -- J.P. Howell struck out 13 in seven innings and Michael Hollimon homered and drove in three runs as Texas defeated Vanderbilt, 15-3, in the first game of their best-of-three NCAA super regional series.
Drew Stubbs and Taylor Teagarden also homered for the Longhorns, who had 16 hits.
Jeremy Sowers (10-6), a first-round draft choice of the Cleveland Indians, allowed eight hits and seven runs in 3 1-3 innings. The Commodores used five pitchers.
Howell (14-2) gave up two earned runs on six hits and a walk.
Texas (54-13) scored five runs in the second inning, highlighted by Hollimon's two-run double. Hollimon added a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Drew Stubbs, Taylor Teagarden, Curtis Thigpen and Seth Johnston each drove in two runs.
Matt Jones hit a two-run homer for Vanderbilt (45-18).
Georgia 7, Georgia Tech 5
ATLANTA -- Bobby Felmy hit a three-run homer and reliever Johnny Dobbs escaped a bases-loaded jam to lead Georgia past Georgia Tech in the first game of their best-of-three NCAA super regional series.
Marshall Szabo went 2-for-5 and had a two-run single to move the Bulldogs (42-21) within one win of a trip to the College World Series. Clint Sammons scored two runs and Will Startup pitched the final three innings for his ninth save.
Mike Nickeas had three hits -- including a home run -- and Eric Patterson also homered for the Yellow Jackets (44-20), who lost for only the third time in 26 games.
Dobbs (5-2) pitched 2 1-3 innings in relief of starter Michael Hyle and allowed only Nickeas' solo shot in the sixth. He struck out one and walked one.
Dobbs came in to relieve Hyle with two outs in the fourth, inheriting a two-ball count on Mike Trapani. He promptly walked him and Patterson to load the bases before he got Brandon Boggs to ground out.
Georgia Tech's Micah Owings lasted six innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits, both season highs. He lost for the first time in 10 starts since March 12 against Virginia. He threw 104 pitches to bring his total over the past three outings to 381.
Arkansas 7, Florida St. 5
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Scott Hode went 4-for-5 and Arkansas' bullpen held Florida State to three hits in the final four innings, in the first game of their best-of-three NCAA super regional series..
The Razorbacks put together a three-run fifth inning. Hode singled with one out to start the rally and scored from first when Seminoles catcher Aaron Cheesman dropped a relay throw after Danny Hamblin's double.
Arkansas (44-22) went ahead on two-out RBI singles by Devin Day and Scott Bridges, and added Hamblin's RBI single in the eighth.
Boyd Goodner (3-3) pitched 1 1-3 innings of one-hit relief and Jay Sawatski pitched the last three innings for his sixth save.
Florida State (45-22) had 14 hits, but 11 were singles and the Seminoles stranded 13.
Gibbs Chapman drove in two runs and Rhett James (10-3) gave up 10 hits and three earned runs in 4 2-3 innings for the Seminoles.
Florida State's Stephen Drew, taken in the first round earlier this week by the Arizona Diamondbacks, went 1-for-5.
