East Side house fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at an East Side house caused $15,000 damage.
Battalion Chief Robert A. Hian said Richard Bussey, who lives at 1559 Victor Ave. with his sister, Colisha, left the stove on, causing the fire. Bussey attempted to put out the fire but failed, left the home, returned and unsuccessfully tried again to extinguish the blaze, Hian said. After Bussey failed a second time, Bussey left the home and never reported the fire, Hian said.
A neighbor called the fire department about 6:45 p.m. Friday after seeing smoke coming from the Bussey home, Hian said.
Downtown outages
YOUNGSTOWN -- A problem with an underground cable caused power outages at the city fire station downtown, the Western Reserve Transit Authority bus terminal and the Home Savings & amp; Loan bank, a FirstEnergy spokeswoman said.
Ellen Raines of FirstEnergy said the outage began at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Power was restored to both the fire station and the bus terminal before 6 p.m., and to the bank shortly thereafter.
N. Side fire was arson
YOUNGSTOWN -- Firefighters say a fire that destroyed a vacant three-story apartment building on the city's North Side was purposely set.
Battalion Chief Robert A. Hian said the brick house at 1645 Ohio Ave. was engulfed when firefighters arrived at 5:32 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters were hampered for about 15 minutes because a fire hydrant near the building was clogged, Hian said. The roof of the building caved in, and the third floor collapsed onto the second floor, he said.
Firefighters were at the scene for about four hours. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries when a rope on a 35-foot ladder broke, Hian said.
Damage is estimated at $50,000, and the building was demolished, he said.
