CHAMPION -- Trumbull Career and Technical Center board members took the first step to place a renewal tax on the Nov. 4 ballot.
The renewal is of the 2.4-mill levy, which is now being collected at about 2 mills, for the center. Passage would continue the levy for 10 years.
"It's the same levy that's been in existence since the school was created," said Superintendent Wayne McClain.
The levy expires at the end of 2005.
The levy was originally passed when the center formed in the late 1970s, at 2.4 mills. A replacement, allowing collection to continue at 2.4 mills, passed 10 years ago, said Treasurer Gary Ghizzoni.
What's next
The resolution passed by board members Thursday goes to the Trumbull County auditor's office to certify the millage amount. The panel must pass a second resolution to be delivered to the Trumbull County elections board to place it on the ballot.
McClain said the levy generates about half of the center's budget. For 2004, the levy brought in $5,845,860.
The property tax applies to residents and businesses in all of the county's school districts except Howland, which sends students to the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School.
State law requires school districts to provide 12 programs and 20 classes in career and technical education to students in their junior and senior years of high school.
TCTC offers more than 38 programs of study covering several areas.
