Reminder for septic system to be sent
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Board of Health will soon mail Coitsville and Poland townships residents a reminder to get their septic systems pumped.
The reminder letter also will include pumping interval recommendations and a list of licensed pumpers.
Regular service of septic systems can save homeowners thousands of dollars in repair costs, health department officials said.
A four-person household with a 1,000-gallon septic tank should have the tank pumped every three years to remove septage.
The health board said septage is the liquid and solid material periodically removed from household septic tanks, and is 96 percent to 99 percent water. About 18,000 county households rely on septic tanks for wastewater treatment.
The board began the reminder program in 1997 and has prompted thousands of county homeowners to keep up on preventive maintenance on their septic systems.
