MERCER COUNTY Officials OK funding for area sewer study

Mercer borough operates its own treatment plant.
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County commissioners approved funding for an $18,000 sewer study for Mercer and the surrounding area.
The money will come from the Community Development Block Grant funds given to commissioners for distribution.
Although approval had been sought earlier, Carmen Reicherd of Mercer County Regional Planning Commission said commissioners had delayed their approval because they wanted to ensure the study would determine the best options for Mercer-area sewage needs, not only those of Mercer Borough.
The borough has its own sewer system and treatment plant.
Other actions taken
Commissioners also agreed at their Thursday meeting to hire the local law firm of Ekker, Kuster, McConnell & amp; Epstein to represent Mercer County Children & amp; Youth Services in dependency and adoption matters and Department of Public Welfare appeals. The annual contract amount will be $42,000.
They also authorized advertising for bids for the roof renovation of the Acker Building on Sharon-Mercer Road. The building houses Children and Youth Services and the county bridge department. Bids will be opened June 22.
They also hired Fabian Cleaning, West Middlesex, to clean District Justice McMahon's offices for $2,500, the same amount paid to the previous person who resigned from the job.
They also approved the employee holiday for New Year's Day 2005, which falls on a Saturday, to be observed on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004. This will result in 13 paid holidays this year and 11 in 2005. The dispute in Pennsylvania over the day the holiday would be observed had to be settled by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
