HELOISE Every driver should know how to change a tire
Dear Heloise: Several weeks ago, I was traveling to my in-laws' when I found myself in horrible traffic due to a tornado that had just come through the area -- debris was everywhere. I stopped at my daughter's house and waited for the storm to pass. When I went back to my car to leave, I discovered I had a flat tire. I wasn't sure how to change it, but my daughter knew how.
Later, my daughter was telling a friend's father about the experience, and he wondered if his daughter knew how to change a tire. He decided to take her for a drive into the country and, with no help around, made his daughter change a tire . We need to teach our daughters the same things we expect our sons to know, especially about cars. Diana Nichols, Terre Haute, Ind.
Dear Heloise: When purchasing clothes with extra buttons attached, I save the plastic bags (especially those with self-sealing closures) and use them for storing jewelry when traveling.
They keep necklaces and bracelets from getting tangled, and the bags all fit nicely in one pouch. Because the bags are clear, it's easy to spot which item you're looking for. Earrings can be stored one pair per bag -- or more, if desired. It really helps organize jewelry when traveling. Bobbie Seehafer, Fort Ripley, Minn.
Dear Heloise: When I lived in an apartment, I put a cowbell on the front doorknob. Also, in the kitchen, I stuck a spatula in the space between the door and the frame above the door. If someone tried to open one door, the cowbell would ring loudly, and if someone tried the kitchen door, the spatula would fall and make enough noise to wake me up. Jeanette W., Via E-mail
Dear Heloise: I always had trouble folding my queen-size sheets just right, until one day I looked up and started folding my fitted and top sheets in the reflection of my full-length mirror.
You can see the bottoms lined up by just looking forward, not down! Try it! Cindy Bosso, Edison, N.J.
Dear Heloise: Those square, plastic boxes that 15-ounce powdered drink mixes come in, like powdered chocolate mix for milk, when empty are the perfect size to hold a large box of kitchen matches for camping -- keeps them dry. Meredith Bryant, Goodrich, Texas
