MIDWEST MEET Rahde, Pavlansky tabbed for track meet
Five area seniors will compete in the postseason meet at Ohio Wesleyan.
VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
DELAWARE -- Lordstown track coach Frank Rahde likes to talk about his accomplishments only slightly less than he likes to talk about himself.
But make no mistake. When it comes to coaching high jumpers, he's one of the best in the state.
"I'm OK," he said. "I've had somewhere in the neighborhood of 18 guys jump over six feet.
"I've taken a special interest in the event over the years. It's probably the one I enjoy the most."
This weekend, Rahde will join Boardman's Dave Pavlansky as a coach for the Midwest Meet of Champions, a postseason track meet involving some of the top seniors from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
"It's a fun job," said Pavlansky, who has coached on the team for three years. "Frank is very well-deserving of being placed on the staff -- both from a professional and personal level. He is a well-proven high jump coach, and he is one of our sport's genuinely nice guys."
At Ohio Wesleyan
The meet, which is coordinated by the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches, will take place Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University.
"I'm excited," said Rahde, a former high jumper who graduated from Jackson-Milton in 1971. "I'm also scared and nervous."
Five local athletes will compete at the meet, including Boardman's Mark Lipinsky, Brittany Durkin and Kristen Lauer.
Canfield's Emily Wollet and Beaver Local's Pat Woods, who won a Division II state title in the high jump, will also compete.
Only two athletes in the state are selected for each "lane" event, while three are chosen for distance and field events.
Ginn is billed
Cleveland Glenville's Ted Ginn, Jr., an Ohio State football recruit, will run the 110 hurdles. He set a state record in the event last weekend and won a national title in the event at last year's Adidas Outdoor National Championships. Ginn will also run the 200 and run legs on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
That 4x100 team will also include Glenville's Stephon Fuqua -- a member of three state championship relay teams -- and Myron Howard, who ran on Glenville's 4x100 team.
Elyria's Ken Webber, who was runner-up in the 100 at the state meet, will anchor the relay.
Ohio's boys have won the team title each of the past three years.
The parade of champions begins at 11:45 a.m. Field event competition begins at 12:30 p.m. followed by running events at 1.
