MERCER COUNTY Sharpsville council will extend municipal waste hauler's pact
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Borough council has approved a contract extension with a municipal waste hauler that will keep garbage collection rates the same for the next two years.
Sharpsville has a three-year contract with BFI that expires in December, but the pact offers an option for two, single-year extensions that would keep rates at the same level.
The borough offered to enact those extensions last month and BFI has agreed, said Michael Wilson, borough manager.
Council approved both extensions Wednesday, keeping the quarterly rate at $29, covering both garbage and recycling pickups, Wilson said.
The borough will continue to handle the billing for BFI.
Council also voted to give South Pymatuning Township a $1,200 credit on its water bill, a credit that is expected to be passed on to Dean Dairy in the township.
Sharpsville's water plant supplies municipal water to part of South Pymatuning, including the dairy.
Wilson said South Pymatuning's storage tank cracked and developed a leak last month and repairs to the tank resulted in some sand getting into the waterlines.
That sand apparently made its way into the Dean Dairy system, resulting in the plant's having to shut down temporarily. The result was a $100,000 operating loss, Wilson said.
The township offered to give the dairy a credit on its water bill and asked Sharpsville to agree, Wilson said.
