COLLEGE FOOTBALL Player's death still pending
STAFF/WIRE REPORTS
TUCSON, Ariz. -- A University of Arizona recruit who died during a voluntary practice had an enlarged heart, but heat was not a factor in the death, authorities said.
The Pima County (Ariz.) Medical Examiner's Office, which conducted an autopsy on the body of McCollins Umeh, said the official cause of death was pending.
The office will conduct a further examination of organ tissue and toxicology results.
Recruited by Stoops
Umeh, who was recruited by newly-hired Wildcat coach Mike Stoops, died Tuesday afternoon after collapsing 15 minutes into his first voluntary off-season workout at Arizona.
Stoops is a Cardinal Mooney High graduate and the brother of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
Umeh, 18, collapsed on the field less than 24 hours after arriving on campus and was taken to nearby University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The University of Arizona Police Department said it will await the results by the medical examiner's office prior to proceeding further with this investigation.
