Penn State wide receiver receives prison sentence

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Penn State wide receiver Maurice Humphrey was sentenced to 3 to 12 months in prison for assaulting his former girlfriend and her friend, both Penn State track athletes, last year.
Humphrey is asking to serve the sentence in a rehabilitation center or confined to his home, his attorney, Tony DeBoef, said Tuesday.
Centre County Judge David Grine said in sentencing Humphrey on Tuesday that he would receive credit for two days spent in jail following his arrest and almost two months spent in a Reading rehabilitation clinic.
District Attorney Ray Gricar said he would oppose Humphrey's request. "I think [Humphrey] needs to spend some time in jail," he said.
DeBoef said Humphrey voluntarily checked himself into the rehab clinic last December for "anger management and alcohol dependence" treatment. He said a decision would be made by Friday on where Humphrey would serve his sentence.
Humphrey, of New Britain, Conn., was convicted of hitting ex-girlfriend Jennifer Maline and her friend Christopher Lolagne in a confrontation Nov. 23 at Maline's apartment.
Following his prison sentence, Humphrey will be on probation for two years and can have no contact with Lolange or Maline, the judge said. He also will have to pay more than $13,600 to Maline and Lolange, and to Lolange's insurance company and parents, for medical bills and property damage.
