Board seeks answers over voter registration effort

WARREN -- The Trumbull County Board of Elections will ask members of America Coming Together to answer questions about the group's efforts to register voters.
Nick Melfi, board chairman, said the group has registered people that the board can't document.
"We've decided to contact the people [from America Coming Together] and request, even though we have subpoena power, that they appear before us and answer some questions," Melfi said.
According to its Web site, America Coming Together intends to build the largest voter mobilization effort in history to defeat incumbent President Bush in November.
The board also accepted the resignation of member Barbara Katzenberger. Last month, the state attorney general's office ruled that Katzenberger's two positions, as an elections board member and deputy county treasurer, are incompatible.
The AG decision said the elections board may rule on issues affecting Katzenberger's boss, county Treasurer Christ Michelakis.
Katzenberger initially had said she would keep the elections board post but opted for the deputy treasurer position instead. In her letter to the board, she said her decision was due to circumstances beyond her control, Melfi said.
