Westminster
Several area high school graduates will attend Westminster and continue their athletic careers:
Pete Henderson-Sparks (5-9, 180), a wide receiver-defensive back for Warren Harding High, caught 24 passes for 316 yards and a 13.2-yard average, and scored three TDs last season. He made All-Trumbull County, All-Steel Valley Conference and All-District teams, and shared the Raiders' Most Outstanding Receiver honors. He also was selected for the second edition of the "Best in USA High School Football." The son of Milton and Cheryl Henderson, Henderson-Sparks made the honor roll and National Honor Society, and plans to major in business management.
Kevin Lorello (6-1, 202), quarterback from Mohawk, was a two-year starter and completed 105 passes for 1,750 yards and 15 TDs for his career. Lorello served as team captain and made all-conference honors. He also was a two-year letterman on the baseball team. The son of Frank and Kathy Lorello, Kevin was a National Honor Society student and is planning to major in English.
Adam Hughes (5-8. 150), a wide receiver-defensive back from Mathews High, is a four-year letterman with career totals of 1,500 yards rushing in 230 carries and 16 TDs, and 45 pass receptions for 923 yards and nine TDs. Hughes also returned five kickoffs and four punts for touchdowns, while averaging over 25 and 40 yards per punt and kickoff return, respectively. He was an All-Ohio honorable mention as a junior and senior, and made the All-Inter-County League and All-Trumbull County first teams three times. Hughes also was picked to the All-Northeast Ohio team for three years, making the first team as a junior and senior, and honorable mention as a sophomore. He also lettered four years in track and field and three years in baseball. The son of Carl and Carol Hughes of Cortland, he is a four-year member of the honor roll with a 3.2 grade-point average, and plans to major in business administration.
David Van Dyne (6-1, 170), outside linebacker from Southern Local, registered 104 tackles, one pass breakup, one interception, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries as a senior. In his junior year, he had 119 tackles three pass breakups and one interception, and earned MVP and All-Quad County honors. Van Dyne also played basketball and won the Al Gurone award and baseball and won the Offensive Award. The son of Dave and Diane Van Dyne of Salineville, David plans to major in pre-engineering.
Dishawn Robinson (5-5, 168), a linebacker/fullback for Warren Harding, had 25 solo tackles, 23 assists, four QB sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups last season, and was selected to the All-SVC team. The son of Mary Miller, Robinson is a scholar-athlete and made the honor roll.
Jessica Cooper, a middle blocker and outside hitter for the Laurel volleyball team, posted team-high totals of 303 kills, 304 points, 69 aces and 39 blocks this past season, was voted Most Improved Player on the team and earned All-Section MVP honors. Cooper, the daughter of Dan and Judy Cooper of New Castle, also competed in the high jump for the track team and gained MVP honors twice while also setting the Tri-County League record and placing first in the WPIAL and fifth in the state. She will join her older sister, Rachael, on the Westminster team. Rachael is a sophomore.
Jenna Hinks, an outside hitter at Mineral Ridge, had an 88.4 setting percentage last season with 19 aces, 187 set aces, 77.9 hitting percentage, 105 kills and 95 digs. Hinks was named to the all-district second team and the All-Inter-County League first team. She will join her sister, Erin, on the Westminster volleyball team. Hinks also competed in track and field, and was Homecoming Queen and a member of the National Honor Society. Her parents are Gary ands Rose Hinks.
Diana Conzett, an outside hitter at Hubbard, had 172 kills, 121 digs, 85 blocks, five assists and 27 aces last season, and garnered all-district and All-Trumbull Athletic Conference honors. She also was named TAC Player of the Week and Channel 21 Student-Athlete of the week. As a junior, Consett made honorable mention All-District and the All-TAC second team.
David Colella (6-1, 185) was a kicker and pitcher-outfielder for the New Castle football and baseball teams, winning three letters in each sport. He batted .322 this baseball season and won the C.W. Smith All-Tourney Team Scholar-Athlete honor. A National Honor Society member, Colella plans to major in biology. He is the son of David and Linda Colella.
Jessica Kausits, a midfielder-forward for Ursuline's soccer team from Lowellville, had career totals of 28 goals and 32 assists, and made the All-SVC team. Kausits was Ursuline's Top Offensive Player for three straight years (2001-03), and an All-Mahoning County selection as a junior and senior, making the second and first teams, respectively. She also was a three-year letter-winner in track and field, twice qualifying for the state championship with the 4x400 relay team. She also made Senior All-Star honors. Jessica is the daughter of Dave and Lisa Kausits.
Gannon
Four area players were with the Gannon University baseball team this spring, including Sean Lysowski, a freshman catcher from Boardman High who saw limited duty. The others were all from Hickory High -- Joe Daoust, a junior outfielder; Brad Hruska, a senior pitcher; and Robert States, a junior pitcher. Daoust played in 33 games, starting 29 of them, and batted .264 (19-for-72) and had 10 RBIs. States had a 1-0 record and 3.86 ERA with two saves in 16.1 innings, while Hruska was 0-2 with a 6.89 ERA in 15 2/3 innings and 15 strikeouts and 13 walks.
Akron
Andy Capraruolo (Boardman), a junior outfielder with the baseball team in his third season after transferring from Toledo, led the Zips in nine offensive statistical categories this season: batting average (.299 on 53-for-177), slugging percentage (.429), on-base percentage (.462), runs scored (37), doubles (13), total bases (76), walks (38) total plate appearances (237) and strikeouts (43), and he has 29 RBIs.
Heidelberg
The men's track team had four area members this season -- junior Tim DiVito (Boardman) and freshmen George Washko (Cortland), Mike Yankey (Girard) and Garret Sevek (Salem). Divito and Washko competed in the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, in which Heidelberg placed eighth. DiVito ran the 5- and 10-kilometer runs in 16:04.98 and 34:17.99. Washko took 14th in the shot put with 12.55 meters.
Ohio Northern
Josh Conkey, a freshman pitcher from Ursuline High and McDonald, compiled a 2-1 record with three saves and a 6.75 ERA over 22 2/3 innings. Conkey achieved his first collegiate win when the Polar Bears beat Tri-State, 11-3, in the nightcap of a doubleheader April 4. He pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and two walks. Conkey helped ONU to a 19-20 record, including 5-12 in the OAC.
