Munitions removed from apartment
GIRARD -- Law enforcement officials seized military munitions found Monday in the East Main Street apartment of a man who died.
Taken from the apartment were four hand grenades, a mortar shell and homemade fireworks.
When Tom Collins was found dead last week in his apartment, police removed two guns. The Trumbull County coroner ruled the death a suicide.
Police Capt. Frank Bigowsky said Collins was known to possess firearms, and police noticed some locked cabinets in the apartment during the death investigation.
Bigowsky said he had asked Fremont Camerino of Niles, former city council president there and Collins' stepfather, if police could be present when the family went through the apartment.
After the munitions were located in a locked metal cabinet, the U.S. Treasurer Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Youngstown Bomb Squad removed them for disposal.
Bigowsky said there was no danger to neighbors because some were duds, and they had been in the apartment for at least two weeks.
