Cigarettes stolen
WARREN -- An employee of the Albert Guarnieri Company, 1133 E. Market St., told police that someone stole 38 cartons of cigarettes from a company vehicle. The theft was reported around 7:40 a.m. Monday. No arrests were made.
Company sues trustees
WARREN -- A Twinsburg company is suing Gustavus Township trustees, stating officials owe the business $141,092. The Shelly Company, of Canyon Falls Boulevard, Twinsburg, filed the lawsuit in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. A hearing date has not been set. Trustees could not be reached. Shelly, which provides construction service and supplies, states in the suit that the company did the work required but has not been paid. The work was part of the township's 2003 road improvement project, the suit states.
Wildlife questions
VIENNA -- A wildlife officer will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the Vienna Township Neighborhood watch organization at 7 p.m. Monday at town hall. Jerrod Allison, a wildlife officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, will attend and answer any questions on the recent bear sightings in Trumbull County. Police Chief David Ovesny will give his monthly report. The group is also planning a free July 4 celebration at the township gazebo. Music will be provided at 6 p.m. by "Just the Two of Us" and at 8:15, Danny G will present "Memories of Elvis Tribute." Refreshments will be available.
Contract extended
CORTLAND -- City council extended for 60 days the contract with the Northern Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, which represents police officers so that both the union and city officials may explore health insurance options, city officials said. The pact would have expired June 30. Council members also approved a $44,085 contract at their regular meeting Monday with Foust Construction Inc. of Girard for the West Main Street sidewalk project.
Motorcyclist injured
WEATHERSFIELD -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Southington post, is investigating an accident that sent the driver of a motorcycle to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, after a crash on Warner Avenue around 8 p.m. Monday. Michael Stith, 43, of Mineral Ridge, was listed in stable condition today. The driver of a car, who was not injured, failed to yield while turning left, the patrol said.
Wash Fido and the Ford
YOUNGSTOWN -- Animal Charity will have a dog and car wash from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at its offices at 3722 South Ave. A dog bath will cost $10, and the cost of a car wash will start at $5 and increase based on the type of vehicle. All proceeds benefit Animal Charity, a nonprofit organization that offers spaying and neutering and pet wellness services.
High ozone levels
AUSTINTOWN -- The Eastgate Regional Council of Governments says ozone levels are expected to be high today in the Mahoning Valley, irritating eyes and lungs, especially among those with respiratory conditions, and damaging crops. Eastgate is asking Valley residents to avoid filling their cars or using gas-powered lawn mowers until after 7 p.m., and to carpool to help combat ozone creation. Weather changes are expected to alleviate the problem by Thursday.
Charged with fraud
CLEVELAND -- A Youngstown podiatrist is accused of defrauding Medicare by submitting claims for services he never provided. Dr. Walter M. Malkin, 74, of E. Arms Drive, Hubbard, with offices on Gypsy Lane in Youngstown, is accused of submitting claims for surgical procedures on patients for whom he had provided only routine nail care, according to a press release from the United States Department of Justice. Dr. Malkin was charged after an FBI investigation. He is alleged to have filed fraudulent claims from January 1998 through September 2002 and as a result, a press release states, received payments to which he was not entitled totaling about $67,500.
