Driver and passengerface several charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A loaded handgun was found under the center console of a car driven by Willie Hunt, 18, of Oxford Avenue, Campbell, that police stopped Saturday night on North Garland Avenue for not having a front license plate, reports show.
Hunt was arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon and issued a citation for not having a front plate.
His passenger, Matthew Johnson, 23, of Orrin Avenue, was charged with drug abuse (crack cocaine).
Police said they found bags of the suspected drug on the passenger-side floor board.
UW seeks volunteersfor September event
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown-Mahoning Valley United Way is seeking volunteers to participate in its seventh annual "Day of Caring" on Sept. 14.
On this day, which also kicks off the annual United Way fund-raising campaign, volunteers from local businesses complete various tasks and organizing activities for United Way agencies.
The work consists of painting, cleaning, home repairs, serving meals and participating in activities and field trips.

Flag disposal ceremonyplanned in Austintown
AUSTINTOWN -- The Austintown Memorial American Legion Post 301 will have a flag disposal ceremony next Monday, Flag Day, at Wickliffe Circle, Veterans Park in Austintown.
The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. rain or shine.
Post 301 asks that all unserviceable U.S. flags either be dropped off at the American Legion Post on Oakwood (between 4 Mile Run and Meridian Road) before June 14 or brought to the site the day of the ceremony.
Apartment waiting list
NILES -- The waiting list for Central Park Apartments will be reopened for a limited time beginning Monday.
Beatrice Baer, board secretary of the Niles Churches for Housing Inc., which owns the 50-unit facility for the elderly, said the current list is down to 19 applicants and has been closed for three years.
The goal is to have a list of 30.
Those who want to be on the list can sign up from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at the office, 155 E. State St.

GED Practice Test
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is offering the official GED Practice Test from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the ABLE classroom, room C-14A at the center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road.
Passage qualifies participants for a fee waiver on the official GED test.
Qualified participants must be at least 18 years old, not enrolled in high school and have an Ohio driver's license or identification card.
