SHARON, Pa. -- A Newport News, Va., man wanted here as a fugitive from justice was arrested early today in Allentown, driving a car he had stolen in Hermitage early Friday, police said.
Trevone Celestine, 23, a Megan's Law registered sex offender, was being questioned by Allentown authorities and was to be held in the Lehigh County Jail, police said.
Both Sharon and Hermitage police said Celestine was driving the Toyota Camry stolen from the parking lot at the Shenango Valley YMCA in Hermitage on Friday morning.
Local police said Allentown police had a brief car chase before they stopped and arrested Celestine sometime around 2 a.m. today.
The local police involvement with Celestine began around 9 a.m. Thursday when Sharon police were called to the F.H. Buhl Club on Pine Street to investigate the theft of a wallet from a locker.
Witnesses pointed out Celestine as the suspect as he fled the club's parking lot in a white minivan.
Sharon police engaged in a slow-speed pursuit of Celestine, which led into Ohio where Celestine drove the van into a ditch on state Route 82.
The van turned out to be stolen from Virginia, police said.
Escaped from hospital
Brookfield Township police took Celestine into custody but he complained of injuries he said he suffered in the accident and was taken to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
He escaped from the hospital later in the day and disappeared until sometime between 8:30 and 10:50 a.m. Friday when he was suspected of stealing the Toyota from outside the YMCA in Hermitage.
Hermitage police said they learned that Celestine had visited the YMCA several times recently, inquiring about securing financial assistance, and was last at the YMCA on Thursday morning, before the chase in Sharon, putting $26 down on a membership fee.
Police said they still don't know why Celestine came to the Shenango Valley or why he returned to Hermitage to steal a car after being chased into Ohio.
They said they don't know how he got from Warren to Hermitage either, although they think a bicycle found at the YMCA was left behind by Celestine after the car theft.
Sharon, Brookfield and Hermitage all have warrants for his arrest.
He is also wanted in Virginia as a parole absconder on an aggravated sexual assault charge and has a second similar charge pending against him.
