2 dead after pickup hits car
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- State police said a Hadley couple died Sunday morning when their car was hit broadside by a pickup truck at the intersection of Hyde Hill Road and Greenville-Sheakleyville Road in Salem Township.
Robert E. Campbell, 72, and his wife, Waeta June Campbell, 72, of Greenville-Sheakleyville Road, were thrown from their Honda CRX compact car upon impact, police said.
Campbell was driving east on Greenville-Sheakleyville Road around 9:35 a.m. Sunday when a full-size pickup truck driven by Howard J. Becker, 48, of Beatty School Road, Hadley, slammed into his car, police said.
Becker was northbound on Hyde Hill Road and failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with Greenville-Sheakleyville Road, striking the Campbell auto broadside, police said.
Tore it in half
The impact tore the car in half, with the rear section striking a tree off the north berm of the road before coming to rest on its right side, police said. The front end came to rest a short distance away on the highway.
Police said they couldn't determine if the Campbells were wearing seat belts.
They were pronounced dead at the scene by Robert Snyder, Mercer County deputy coroner, shortly after 10 a.m.
Becker and a passenger, Kieth E. Becker, 20, also of Hadley, were wearing seat belts and suffered only minor injuries, police said.
Both were taken to UPMC Horizon, police said. No immediate charges were filed, but police said the investigation is continuing.
