Westminster teams win Presidents' Athletic Conference awards
While the Westminster and Grove City College men's teams shared the 2003-04 Presidents' Athletic Conference all-sports trophy, the Westminster women rolled to their first PAC all-sports trophy.
It was the second consecutive all-sports trophy won by the Titan men's teams.
The PAC all-sports trophies are awarded annually to the schools that perform the best across the board in league competition.
First-place finishes are worth six points, second-place finishes are worth five points, down to sixth-place finishes that are worth one point.
By combining the men's and women's scores, Westminster posted the best overall athletic department finish of any PAC school in 2003-04.
Westminster athletic director Jim Dafler praised the efforts of both the Titan men and women for their accomplishments.
All played a role
"The neat thing about winning the conference all-sports trophies is that each and every one of over 400 Titan student-athletes and coaches played a part. It is an accomplishment they can take pride in, and a testament to the Titan tradition of excellence," Dafler said.
Looking at the men's competition, Westminster and Grove City each finished with 41 points, followed by Washington & amp; Jefferson with 38; Thiel with 28; Waynesburg with 27; and Bethany with 23.
The Titan men posted PAC championships in basketball and golf as well as second place league finishes in cross country, swimming and tennis to gain their second straight PAC all-sports trophy.
In women's action, the Titans totaled 43 points to outdistance Grove City with 36 points, Bethany with 29, W & amp;J with 27.5, Waynesburg with 27 and Thiel with 20.
The Titans captured PAC championships in soccer, swimming and golf and placed second in volleyball. Consistency was the key for the Titans, as no Westminster varsity women's team finished lower than third place.
The win by the Westminster women snapped Grove City's three-year run with the PAC women's all-sports trophy.
In combined scoring, Westminster finished with 84 points, ahead of Grove City with 77 points, W & amp;J with 65.5, Bethany 52, Waynesburg 48.5 and Thiel 48.
Reddinger honored
Westminster College softball coach Jan Reddinger and five of her players on the 2004 team walked off with postseason honors this year.
Reddinger, who guided her Titans to a third place finish in the PAC, shared coach of the year honors with Bethany's Jan Forsty. She led the Titans to a 28-13 overall record, including a 6-4 mark in the PAC. She has led her team to winning records in seven of her nine seasons and has a career record of 189-136-1.
Players making the all-conference team were freshman pitcher/designated hitter Jennifer Pancake of Boardman -- she was also selected as the PAC freshman of the year and co-pitcher of the year); Heidi Kimmel of Poland, and Julie Zappa, Shaler. Junior shortstop Lauren Boris, North Allegheny, and sophomore second baseman Abby Mazar, West Allegheny, were selected to the second team.
Pancake posted a 15-9 record and batted .387. Kimmel batted .312, Zappa hit .255, Boris .294; and Mazar .255.
