COLUMBUS -- Scott Monzel went 2-for-4 with five RBIs to lead Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit to a 12-0 win Saturday over Steubenville and the Division II state baseball title.
Chris Gacom pitched a one-hitter for the Warriors (29-5), who also won the championship in 1999. The game was stopped after five innings because Walsh Jesuit led by at least 10 runs.
The Big Red (20-12) trailed only 2-0 after three, but Walsh Jesuit scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Monzel had an RBI groundout in the third and hit two-run singles in the fourth and fifth.
Drew Hoisington went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Walsh Jesuit, and Chris Niro was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Steubenville starter Sam Busic allowed seven runs, six earned, and 11 hits in 31/3 innings. John Irwin was charged with five runs on six hits in 12/3 innings.
Cin. Moeller 6, Mentor 2
CANTON -- Tyler Stovall hit a two-run homer in a six-run second inning that carried Cincinnati Moeller in the Div. I championship game.
Cameron Satterwhite added an RBI double in the rally, and the Cardinals (30-4) helped out the Crusaders (28-3) with two errors and a wild pitch.
Mentor starter Mike Brancazio (5-2) went only 12/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk.
Eric Surkamp (8-0) struck out seven, walked five and allowed two runs, one earned, in 52/3 innings for Moeller.
Andrew Brackman, who pitched a two-hit complete game for Moeller in the semifinals, got the last four outs for the save.
He ended the sixth by striking out Steve Pascoe with runners on second and third, then retired the side in order in the seventh to give Moeller its fourth state baseball title and first since 1993.
New Albany 5, Coldwater 4
CANTON -- New Albany took advantage of walks and errors to win in Div. III.
The Eagles (18-12) were outhit nine to two -- leadoff hitter Ben Jeffers had two singles -- but drew six walks off Coldwater starter Craig Koesters (7-2) and scored two unearned runs on three errors.
Gentry Zacheis, ineffective as a starter in a 9-2 win over Barnesville in the semifinals, got the last four outs for the save.
Coldwater, which beat Perry 5-4 in the semis by scoring three runs in its last at-bat, put two runners on in the seventh against Zacheis before Tyler Schwieterman hit into a double play to end the game.
New Albany scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead on Jeffers' RBI single and Adam Johnson's sacrifice fly. The Eagles went ahead 5-2 by scoring three runs in the fifth, aided by two errors and a wild pitch.
Newark Cath. 3, Triad 1
COLUMBUS -- Newark Catholic scored three unearned runs in the first inning and Doug Stevens made it stand up in the Div. IV title game.
The Green Wave (29-5) won their third consecutive state championship -- and Stevens was a big part of it. He struck out six in his complete game and drove in a run on a groundout after throwing three scoreless innings and getting two hits in the semifinals.
