STATE SOFTBALL Uniontown Lake wins to gain finale
Uniontown Lake and St. Ursula are seeking their first state titles.
ASHLAND (AP) -- Julie Boyes hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning and pitched a five-hitter, to lead Uniontown Lake to a 2-0 win over Pickerington North in the Division I softball semifinals Friday.
Uniontown Lake had only three hits until the seventh, when Sara Mattingly and Rachel Walker both singled and scored on Boyes' one-out double.
Boyes (20-2) struck out four in her complete game, sending the Blue Streaks to today's championship game against Toledo St. Ursula. Neither team has won a state softball title.
Hilary King (15-8) allowed six hits and walked four in seven innings for Pickerington North (22-9).
Division II
ASHLAND -- Lorena Floccari pitched a three-hitter and helped herself with a double and run scored, leading Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit's win in a Div. II semifinal.
Floccari (20-5) struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter as the Warriors (20-5) advanced to today's state championship game against LaGrange Keystone. She also led off the game with a double and scored her team's first run.
Hannah Rockhold (17-7) pitched a complete game for Bath (22-9). She allowed three runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three.
LaGrange Keystone 6, Ashville Teays Valley 0
ASHLAND -- Kristie Malinkey pitched six strong innings and Brandy Jacob and Sarah Stromack provided the offensive punch in LaGrange Keystone's win in the other Div. II semifinal.
Malinkey (14-1) held Teays Valley (18-11) to one hit and struck out five as the Wildcats (31-2) advanced to their first state championship game since losing the 2001 final. Keystone won its only state softball title in 1999.
Jacob went 4-for-4 in the leadoff spot with an RBI and two runs scored. Stromack finished 3-for-3 with an RBI single in a three-run first that included Sarah Miller's two-run single.
Ashley Lewis ended Malinkey's no-hit bid with a triple leading off the sixth, but she was thrown out trying to score. Jessica Burt finished the one-hitter by pitching a perfect seventh.
Calla Helfrey (17-11) allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and five walks in six innings for Teays Valley, a first time participant in the state tournament.
