Shooting injures man
CAMPBELL -- Police are investigating a shooting that slightly injured a 57-year-old Jean Street man. According to the report, the man was taking trash out the back door of his home just before 3 a.m. Thursday when three men grabbed him, held a chrome-plated .45 caliber automatic handgun to his head and demanded his cash.
The man told police that he had no money but handed over two wallets. Then, the report says, one of the men pointed the gun at his legs and pulled the trigger. The bullet grazed the man's left thigh. Police recovered one of the wallets several yards away but were unable to locate any shell casings.
Tentative teachers' pact
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City Area School Board and its teachers have reached tentative agreement on a new contract. Details of the pact won't be released until the school board members and the teachers get a chance to review the package and take a ratification vote. The school board is set to vote at a special meeting set for 8:30 p.m. Monday. The two sides have been negotiating since January. The old contract expires at the end of this month.
Arraigned in gas theft
STRUTHERS -- Patrick S. Carey, 19, of Linden Place, Canfield, is free on $100 bond after being arraigned in municipal court Friday on a theft charge.
According to police, Carey pumped $51.16 worth of gasoline into his full-size Chevy truck at True North, 5810 Struthers-Poland Road, late Thursday and drove away without paying. Police found Carey at a home in the 1900 block of Sequoya Avenue. His trial is set for Dec. 27.
Man arrested in rape
WARREN -- A 26-year-old Youngstown man has been arrested on a rape charge. George Johnson Jr., no street address available, was arrested on the charge Friday. Police say he raped a 40-year-old woman around 2:44 a.m. Friday at a house on Draper Street. Municipal court Judge Thomas Gysegem said a probable cause hearing will be held today to determine if there is enough evidence to hold Johnson in jail until his arraignment Monday.
Sex solicitations
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men were issued citations Friday morning after police said they solicited sex from a patrolwoman posing as a prostitute at Oak Hill and Myrtle avenues on the South Side. Anthony Harris, 24, of Murray Street was issued a citation charging him with soliciting sex for hire and failure to have his driver's license. Mark E. Brown, 46, of Sierra Drive was charged with soliciting sex for hire. Police said Harris offered to trade crack for sex and Brown offered $10. Both are due in municipal court Monday morning for arraignment.
Driving under suspension
STRUTHERS -- Ifrain F. Cruz, 47, of Sheridan Road, Boardman, was fined $150 plus court costs and sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended, and one year's reporting probation after pleading no contest to driving under suspension. A charge of reckless operation was dismissed, with Cruz responsible for court costs.
Police arrested Cruz last August after he pulled into a convenience store parking lot in the 2100 block of Midlothian Boulevard at a high rate of speed and struck two parked cars. Cruz, a diabetic, was disoriented and became unresponsive at the scene of the accident because, the police report states, he failed to take his medication.
2nd reading on tax break
NILES -- Council approved the second reading of legislation that would grant tax relief to a new company. BRT Extrusions plans to open in the city and hire 25 employees in the first year, and possibly double or triple that number in the next few years. In return, company officials asked council for a 10-year, 75-percent abatement on property taxes.
Council passed the first reading Wednesday, and the second reading at a special meeting Thursday. The matter could be approved at the next regular council meeting, set for June 16.
School funding hearings
YOUNGSTOWN -- The public is invited to attend two hearings in room 116 at the Irene Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St., at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday regarding federal funds for education in the Youngstown School District.
The board of education will submit applications for Federal Title VI-B and P.L. 99-457 Early Childhood Funds for the 2004-05 school year.
The purpose of the 10 a.m. hearing is to ask questions and provide input regarding the use of Title VI-B money allocated to the district.
The 11 a.m. hearing will provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions and provide input regarding the use of P.L. 99-457 money allocated to the district.
