Sessions set at libraries to promote conversation

Organizers want to promote intelligent and spirited conversation.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County are teaming up for a series of conversation salons at the main library and at Boardman and Poland branches.
The first sessions will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Austintown Library, 600 S. Raccoon Road, and 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Boardman Library, 7680 Glenwood Ave.
Other sessions are scheduled for 7 p.m. June 16 at the main library, 305 Wick Ave., and 10 a.m. June 24 at the Poland Library, 311 S. Main. For more information, call the libraries.
Adults 55 and older are encouraged to participate to discuss current events, the arts, social and cultural issues, politics, ethics entertainment, science and technology, or whatever else may be on their minds.
Bob Loch started the concept of monthly conversation salons as director of university outreach at YSU's Metro College.
"The art of direct, face-to-face conversation among a diverse group of interesting, informed, spirited people is in danger of becoming extinct," Loch said. He wants to ensure that doesn't happen.
Loch is working on the project with Deborah Liptak, library development director.
"The goal of these conversation salons is simple: To have good conversation among the members and to engage the exploration of new ideas in an open discussion with others who share your interests," said Carlton Sears, public library director.
