Kent St. pitchers subdue Irish, 2-1

Canfield's Matt Sega scored the winning run for the Golden Flashes.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Notre Dame wanted to wear down Kent State pitcher Andy Sonnanstine.
It never happened.
Sonnanstine pitched two complete-game victories on two days rest last week in the Mid-American Conference tournament. He continued his good work, allowing just one unearned run on 135 pitches over seven innings Friday as the fourth-seeded Golden Flashes beat host Notre Dame 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA regional tournament.
"What Andy did today against a high-powered offense like Notre Dame, you can't say enough about what he's done not only today but all season," Kent State coach Rick Rembielak said. "He gave them a different look, competed and didn't give in against a very aggressive offense."
Arizona is next
The Golden Flashes (36-25) will play Arizona (31-24-1) today while the Fighting Irish (49-11) will play UC Irvine (34-21-1).
Richard Mercado drove in three runs Friday as the Wildcats beat the Anteaters 7-3 in the second game.
Sonnanstine (11-4) got off to a rocky start against the Irish, giving up two singles and two hard-hit flyballs to the warning track in the first inning.
"I thought maybe this guy is going to get tired and we're going to get into him good," Irish coach Paul Mainieri said. "Then [Steve] Andres hit that ball to the fence and it seemed like it just gave the kid a second wind."
Sonnanstine also pitched out of jams in the third and fifth innings, stranding men at third base with one out.
Sonnanstine said fatigue was never a problem.
"I've never been to a regional before so there was a little adrenaline pumping," he said. "I really didn't want to come out."
Wagler gets save
Chad Wagler didn't allow a hit in the final two innings to earn his seventh save.
The Golden Flashes went ahead 1-0 when Adam Crowder opened the fifth with a walk and scored on an RBI single by Davis. Notre Dame tied the score in the seventh. Kent State went ahead to stay in the eighth when third baseman Matt Sega of Canfield scored on a single by Will Vazquez.
"I wanted to do anything I could to get that run back," Sega said.
Notre Dame starter Chris Niesel (8-3) allowed both earned runs, giving up nine hits and a walk while striking out four before a crowd of 2,117, the fourth largest crowd ever at Eck Stadium.
In the second game, Arizona jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jeff Van Houten had an RBI single and later scored on an infield single by Mercado.
The Anteaters tied the score in the third on a bases-loaded single by Mark Wagner to shallow center. The second run scored when Derek Decater bobbled the ball, his first error of the season.
Decater clouts homer
Decater redeemed himself in the fourth, hitting his first homer of the season to right. Jordan Brown added a solo shot in the fifth, his 11th. Mercado drove in two runs in the seventh as the Wildcats scored three.
The Anteaters stranded 12 base-runners, loading the bases four times but getting just three runs.
Koley Kolberg (9-6) allowed two earned runs in six innings. Scott Burns allowed one run over three innings for his third save. Brett Smith (8-5) allowed six earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.
