Columbiana County qualifies for federal aid in storm damage

SALEM -- Columbiana County residents and businesses that suffered losses in the May 18 storms and flooding are eligible for disaster assistance.
An announcement Friday by the White House said that President Bush has determined Columbiana is among eight Ohio counties to have been subjected to a "major disaster" last month and that it qualifies for federal aid.
The other counties in the declaration are Athens, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Noble, Perry and Summit.
Apply for grants
The action means that May 18 storm and flood victims can apply to the federal emergency management agency for grants for repairs made necessary by the severe weather, explained Barbara Ellis, a Federal Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman.
The cost of temporary lodging also may be paid for with federal dollars.
Aid will not be income-based, Ellis said.
Anyone who believes they may qualify for the help should call (800) 621-3362 beginning today.
The toll-free number will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.
