Old-fashioned building skills
BURTON -- How do you raise a sugar house using only wood-crafting tools? That's what Yankee and Amish timber framers will do beginning at 6 a.m. June 19 in the Natural Resource Area of Great Geauga County Fairgrounds, which is north of Village Square.
Except for chain saws that will be used to cut down trees, workers will use only the tools that would have been available when earlier residents of Geauga County began to build sugar houses to protect their maple syrup-making equipment. The event is sponsored by Northeast Ohio Maple Producers and the state Division of Forestry.
Observers should bring lawn chairs. The new building will be formally dedicated Sept. 2, during the Great Geauga County Fair. Call (440) 968-0199 for information.

Local pianist's world travels
Pianist Roman Rudnytsky of Boardman, on the faculty at Youngstown State University's Dana School of Music, will perform in Saipan Saturday and next Sunday during ceremonies observing the 60th anniversary of the liberation of that Pacific island.
Rudnytsky will perform works by American composers for those in attendance, including World War II veterans.
Saipan, which is north of Guam, was taken over by Japan before World War II. Saipan was the site of a fierce battle between Japanese and American forces in 1944.
The Americans were victorious, and Saipan became the site of U.S. bases and airfields, including that which housed the Enola Gay aircraft, which dropped the first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.
Rudnytsky's travels also will take him to Great Britain and Macedonia in July; Honduras, Peru and Hunter, N.Y. in August; and Jamaica, Nicaragua and Poland this fall.
