CANTON -- Andrew Brackman struck out 11 while tossing a two-hitter, and Cincinnati Moeller advanced to its first state baseball title game since 1993 with a 6-1 win over Cleveland St. Ignatius in the Division I semifinals Thursday.
Brackman (7-0) retired the Wildcats (25-7) in order five of seven innings, allowing a run in the third when Greg Feltes doubled home Josiah Kedzior, who had walked.
A multi-sport standout who was a runner-up in Ohio Mr. Basketball voting to Jamar Butler of Lima Shawnee, Brackman didn't walk another batter and gave up only one more hit -- Jason Adamczyk's single in the fourth.
The Crusaders (27-3) scored three runs in the third and fifth innings. Mitch Kuczek was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and David Oberly went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Mentor 2, Reynoldsburg 1
CANTON -- Bill Mustard drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning and Mentor held off Reynoldsburg to win a Div. I semifinal.
The Cardinals (30-3) hadn't scored since Tom Doty's home run leading off the second. Pitcher Matt Fryer's throwing error put Tyler Bortnick on second with none out, he moved to third on Denver Wolf's sacrifice bunt and scored on Mustard's fly out to right.
Thom Abbott (11-0) allowed a single to Mike Arp with two outs in the bottom of the 10th before getting Tyler Hachschwender on a popup to end it. Abbott pitched 32/3 innings of scoreless relief after Brett Glavan gave up one run in 61/3 innings.
Walsh Jesuit 7, Bellefontaine 3
COLUMBUS -- Chris Niro pitched a complete game and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, leading Walsh Jesuit over Bellefontaine in a Div. II semifinal.
Nick Haught added a two-run double in a five-run fourth inning for the Warriors (28-5), who will play Steubenville for the championship Saturday.
Niro gave up three runs on nine hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. He also singled, tripled and scored both his runs on RBI hits by Blake Chaffee.
Andy Richardson went 3-for-4 and Brad Winter was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Bellefontaine (25-5), which was playing in the semifinals for the first time.
Walsh Jesuit won its only state baseball crown in 1999 in its first title game appearance.
