CLASS B LEAGUE Mink Financial holds off rally for fifth victory
Mink Financial is tied for first place in the standings with Astro Falcons.
STRUTHERS -- Mink Financial survived a four-run seventh-inning rally by Dave Sugar Excavating to win 7-6 and improve to 5-1 in the Class B League Thursday at Cene Park.
Matt Weimer went the first five innings to pick up the win for his second victory this season. Weimer allowed no earned runs, three hits, and had four strikeouts.
Dave Piersante had a double and two RBIs and Dave Piersante a double for the winners, who committed six errors.
Joel Imler had a triple and a single, while Dan Deluca had two hits for Sugar (2-3). Bob Melnek suffered the loss. Sugar left 10 men on base.
Rondinelli 14, Yo. Express 2
Rondinelli used a 20-hit attack to move to 3-2.
Phil Williamson, Tom Clayton and George Kovac had three hits each for Rondinelli. One of Williamson's hits was a triple, while Clayton and Kovac had doubles.
Kyle McCarthy got the win in relief of Kevin Drummond, who had to leave the game in the fourth inning after being hit in the face with a line drive.
Drummond had two hits, as did Andy Wilmouth, Brad Borghetti and Dan Babyak.
For the Express (0-5), Pat Smith lost for the second time. Only two of the seven runs he allowed were earned.
Wharmby's Sports 13, Youngstown Propane 1
Pat Owen had three doubles to lead Wharmby's 13-hit attack. Wharmby's (4-1) is a half-game out of a tie for first place.
Jessie Alfreno also had three hits, one a double, while Alan Stevens and Lou Kopachy had two hits each for the winners.
Mike Holmes won his second game of the year as he struck out eight and walked one.
For Propane (2-4), Jake Zatchok had a single and a double.
Astro Falcons 5, Livi Steel 3
Astro Falcons rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to come back and defeat Livi Steel. The win kept the Falcons in a tie with Mink Financial for first place at 5-1. Livi falls to 3-3.
With the score 3-2, Livi had three straight hits to start the seventh, the third by Joe Irwin that tied the game at 3-3.
Then after the next two Astro batters were retired, Frank Turocy hit his second double of the game to plate the game-winning runs. Chad Baker had a two-run scoring double in the first inning for the winners.
Mike Ellis won his second game of the year, tossing a complete game. He had seven strikeouts.
For Livi, Tim Novotny had a double and two singles, while Marc Rossi hit a bases-loaded triple in the third inning. Willie Segulla took the loss, going the distance with four strikeouts.
Line Drive 11, Roth Brothers 1
Line Drive scored 11 runs on as many hits to break its two-game losing streak to move to 3-2.
Dom Modarelli and Grant Sevek had a triple and a single, while Sevek had two doubles for Line Drive. Winning pitcher Ryan McCallister allowed one run on three hits. He struck out two.
For Roth (0-5), losing pitcher Jeff Claar had a single.
