NILES -- Council will meet in special session at 7 tonight to discuss and vote on a tax abatement request from BRT Extrusions.
Officials from the new company, whose location hasn't been disclosed, addressed council at Wednesday's regular meeting, saying the business plans to hire 25 people in the first year, and possibly double or triple that number in the next few years.
Girl dies in horse accident
CHERRY VALLEY, Ohio (AP) -- A 12-year-old northeast Ohio girl was dragged to death by her horse while picking up stones in a pasture at her family's home.
Sarah Kness of Cherry Valley, who suffered injuries to her body, head and neck, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Joseph Health Center in Andover shortly after the accident.
She had a lead rope around her waist and around her horse's neck when something spooked the horse, said Ashtabula County coroner's investigator Rich Mongell.
Sarah's mother, Anita Kness, said Sarah was devoted to her horse and had been horseback riding for about a year. "Her horse meant everything to her," she said.
Kness said the family is planning to sell both of its horses. Cherry Valley is about 55 miles east of Cleveland.
Village board meeting
NEWTON FALLS -- The village school board has rescheduled its regular board meeting from Tuesday to 6:30 p.m. June 23.
The meeting will be in Room 101 in the high school, 907 Milton Blvd.
The board also will conduct a public hearing on the Newton Falls Public Library budget.
Sidewalk office hours
WARREN -- Councilman John Homlitas, D-3rd, will conduct his June sidewalk office hours beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Montclair Street Northeast and Garfield Drive Northeast.
Contestants needed
NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Italian Festival is seeking contestants for the first annual Miss Italian Pageant, which will take place June 10-13 at Eastwood Field.
The pageant winner will receive $500; first runner-up, $200; and second runner-up, $100.

Boat safety inspections
WARREN -- Free boat safety inspections will be provided from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the launching area in Mosquito Lake State Park.
Inspections will be performed by certified vessel examiners, who will issue State of Ohio safety decals for those boats passing inspections.
Members of the Mosquito Lake Power Squadron will provide educational materials and information about the United States Sail and Power Squadrons.
Burning mattress
FARRELL, Pa. -- Fire Chief Joseph Santell said smoke from a burning mattress drew firefighters to the Gibbs Hauling Service building at Stambaugh Avenue and Idaho Street.
The cause wasn't immediately determined, but Santell said it is possible someone discarded a cigarette that caused the fire around 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Although there was a fair amount of smoke, there was no fire damage, Santell said.
Cops arrest Va. fugitive
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a man accused of assaulting his girlfriend turned out to be a fugitive wanted in Virginia.
Daniel S. Digman, 26, of Prospect Avenue was arrested around 1 p.m. Tuesday at his home on charges of simple assault and false imprisonment in the assault of his 19-year-old girlfriend Monday in the Prospect Street home they share.
After his arrest, police learned Digman is wanted on charges of grand larceny in Montgomery County, Virginia.
He was arraigned before District Justice James McMahon, who ordered him held in Mercer County Jail on $50,000 bond.
'Fish for Free Day' in Pa.
SHARON, Pa. -- Saturday is the second "Fish for Free Day" in Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will allow anyone to legally fish for in-season species such as trout, walleye and panfish. No license will be required, but anglers must still follow the normal rules and regulations dealing with seasons, sizes and creel limits.
The goal is to foster interest in outdoor recreation in the state.
