Mercury 73, Comets 63
PHOENIX -- Penny Taylor, Anna DeForge and reserve Shereka Wright scored 16 points apiece and Phoenix set a franchise record with 11 3-pointers against Houston. The Mercury (3-1), who had the worst record in the WNBA last year and profited by drafting Diana Taurasi No. 1, moved into first in the Western Conference with their third straight win. Taurasi had 13 points, six assists and five rebounds. Tina Thompson had 19 points and Kedra Holland-Corn 15 for the Comets. The Mercury made a WNBA season-high 11-of-20 3-pointers.
Sparks 73, Storm 70
LOS ANGELES -- Lisa Leslie had 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Mwadi Mabika added 19 points to lead Los Angeles. Lauren Jackson scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Storm, who lost for the second consecutive game. Sheri Sam added 15 points and nine rebounds. Leslie almost dunked for the second time in her WNBA career with 1:39 to play in the first half after she made a steal, but the ball hit the heel of the rim. Leslie became the first WNBA player to dunk in a game in 2002 against the now-defunct Miami Sol. DeLisha Milton-Jones contributed 16 points for Los Angeles.
