NILES -- A 47-year-old city man was scheduled for arraignment in municipal court today after his neighbor was attacked Sunday with a hatchet.
Tom Muccio of 404 Hogarth Ave. is charged with felonious assault and aggravated burglary.
His neighbor, William A. Jensen of 434 Horgarth, was in stable condition this morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
According to police reports, Muccio threw a hammer through a window at the Jensen residence and then chased off Jensen's son, William Jr., with a hatchet.
The report alleges that Muccio struck the elder Jensen in the head with the hatchet.
Underage sales chargedat convenience stores
YOUNGSTOWN -- Convenience store clerks from Ally Deli and Food Mart, 3216 South Ave.; Petra Foods, 2402 South Ave.; and Danny G's, 2328 Mahoning Ave., were due in municipal court today, charged with selling alcohol to an underage person.
Vice squad officers said Raed N. Abuali, 28, of Glenwood Avenue sold a six-pack of beer to a 20-year-old cooperating witness at Ally Deli; Francina C. Orellano, 35, of Tod Avenue sold a six-pack of beer to a 19-year-old at Petra; and Abdo Ahmed Saleh, 42, of Mahoning Avenue sold a six-pack of beer to a 20-year-old at Danny G's.
All three clerks were issued citations Friday night.
Man faces charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Devon Sharper, 23, of Idora Avenue was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, drug-abuse marijuana, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license after police confronted him outside a suspected drug house on West Chalmers Avenue over the weekend.
Police said Sharper was able to free his right hand from handcuffs and attempted to run, striking an officer in the process.
Sharper later explained that he is double jointed in his thumbs and showed police how he moved his right thumb to escape from the handcuffs.
Sharper was treated for facial injuries suffered during the arrest before being booked into the county jail.
Special meeting
LOWELLVILLE -- The Lowellville Board of Education will have a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the high school's library-media center.
The board then will adjourn and move to an executive session for a suspension hearing.
Girl, 17, is criticalafter fall in Pa. park
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A 17-year-old girl was in critical condition this morning after a fall Monday afternoon near the Kildoo Falls in McConnell's Mill State Park.
Obie Derr, park manager, said Christina Thomas was hiking with her boyfriend around 4:30 p.m. when the pair went off the regular trail.
Derr did know where Thomas lives.
She was walking ahead of her boyfriend when she turned to speak to him and fell about 32 feet in an area between Kildoo Bridge and the Slippery Rock Creek, Derr said.
The park manager said she was flown to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. Derr said another person had fallen in that same spot about six years ago.
He noted that the rocks along the water are slippery, and park rangers advise everyone to stay on the marked trails.
Apprehended at storefor suspected shoplifting
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said a man accused of shoplifting at the Kaufmann's store in the Shenango Valley Mall also had suspected drugs in his possession.
Philip G. Tunanidas, 53, of Parkway Drive, Poland, was apprehended by store security personnel around 3:25 p.m. Monday after he was suspected of stealing about $80 worth of merchandise.
Police officers called to the scene said they found suspected cocaine and some drug paraphernalia in his possession.
He was held overnight and faced arraignment later today on charges of retail theft, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Restaurant burglary
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said someone broke into C's Waffle House at 2978 E. State St. and took an undisclosed amount of money from an office filing cabinet.
The theft was discovered by employees opening the restaurant for business around 5:40 a.m. Monday.
A back door was found ajar, police said.
