Robber holds up store
BOARDMAN -- A man with a bandana covering his face and a handgun robbed Mahoning Valley Gourmet Foods, 4200 Simon Road. The robber walked into the business about 10 a.m. Saturday, showed the gun and demanded money. He took an undetermined amount of money from the business and from one employee.
Hitchhiker robs driver
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 72-year-old Hubbard man said he was robbed at gunpoint about 5 p.m. Friday after giving a ride to a man on West Dennick Avenue. The victim reported to police that the robber told him to pull his car over, showed him a handgun and demanded his wallet. The victim handed over $9 and his wallet, which had credit cards and personal items. The robber ran off through a yard.
Man dies after accident
JACKSON CENTER, Pa. -- Vincent Yarris, 42, of Second Street in Smithfield, Pa., died at St. Elizabeth Health Center after his minivan went off Interstate 79 in Mercer County about 3 p.m. Friday and struck a tree, state police said. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter. Yarris, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons, police said.
Break-in and robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone broke a basement window to enter The Place Where the Lord Provides, 104 W. Evergreen Ave., early Friday. A computer, monitor and stereo equipment were stolen.
Weather deters cleanups
YOUNGSTOWN -- Heavy rain forced cancellation of two neighborhood cleanups in the city Saturday morning. Organizers of the Andrews Avenue cleanup planned for the McGuffey Overpass area and the Wick Avenue and Logan Way community cleanup and beautification project said they expect to reschedule the events later this month.
Antique car, tractor show
FOWLER -- The township historical society will have an antique car and tractor show at the corner of state Routes 193 and 305 from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 15. The event also will feature a Chinese auction, art show, food and blue grass music. Admission is free and there are no vehicle registration fees.
Awareness is events' goal
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and staff from several Ohio county agencies joined together to develop awareness activities to commemorate August's Child Support Awareness Month.
Two public forums will be in Trumbull County: 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at Frankie's Main Street Diner, 368 N. Main Street in Hubbard, and 7 p.m. Aug. 17 at the county commissioner's office in Warren. UPMC collects blood
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- UPMC Horizon will host a Central Blood Bank blood drive Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Assembly Rooms D and E (off the cafeteria) at the Greenville campus.
Donors will be eligible for Central Blood Bank's free gas for a year promotion. One winner will be drawn every week for 13 weeks. Donors should bring some form of identification with them.
Annual Old Timers Day
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- New Castle's 97th Old Timers Day will be Aug. 11 at Cascade Park. The first annual picnic was held Aug. 23, 1907, and drew 7,000 people from New Castle. This year's festivities start at noon in the Cascade Park Pavilion. The free event will include refreshments, dancing, prizes and souvenirs. Chairman for 2004 is Charles Shepp Jr. The Tom Natale Band will provide entertainment. Frank Bonfield, former city councilman and school board member, will serve as master of ceremonies, and greetings will be given by Mayor Wayne Alexander and Lawrence County President Judge Dominick Motto.
